Continious Crashes

I haven`t been on Second Life in a long time. Anyways I have this big problem that I want to tell you about. It`s very frustrating and troubling.

I hang around at sandboxes a lot just to get my creativity into gear. Whenever I`m constructing, SL freezes randomly without warning, then shifts back to normal. It will do that a few times, then SL will totally freeze, and I have to completely shut down Second Life and open it back up again.

This problem only seems to occur if I`m building. If I`m just exploring or driving around town then the problem doesn`t happen.

At first I thought it had something to do with the collision detection system, so I enabled phantom on certain objects. Crash still happens.

I`ve seen some huge structures that I wish I had the time to build but can`t because SL will always freeze every 20 seconds.

Can anybody help me here? Other 3D applications and programs don`t crash. Here`s my stats:

Graphics Card: GE-FORCE 7800 (relatively new, bought it a few months ago)
Monitor: AOpen
Computer: AMD 64 Athlon
Power Source: TigerPro
Mouse: Logitech
Keyboard: EMachines

Thank you for your help.

well start with the usual dance

do you have any antivirus/antispyware installed and running?

try resetting your router

update all your drivers, video, chipset, sound everything then reinstall directX

I have AVG Free Edition installed.

Maybe it`s crashing because the Sandbox I`m using is quite active. If so, I`ll probably choose the less popular sandboxes at the bottom of the lists, rather than at the top.

try disabling AVG

those things scan all the incoming data, if they think its too much or to weird it will do stuff to defeat it

I hate this.
I bought a brand new computer. Intel 1.66 Ghz centrino coreduo processor, 3G Ram Nvidia 8600M GS with 256MB one of the latest model from Acer but unfortunately with Vista. I have all latest drivers for my equipment. I keep crashing 3 to 4 times/day.

I have TrendMicro antivirus. no virus, no spyware

A don't appreciate my system at all and thinking of going back to ActiveWorlds wich is more stable and less expensive. I know Vista doesn't help me but machines come with it now. it's a fact of life. I keep sending reports every time I crash but nothing can be done. I just bought a small world. i'm thinkng of giving it away and leave! SL never even gave me any sign of life.

I will abandon soon with my group if we can't enjoy a stable platform.

haha Vista is not a fact of life. it's a multi-million-dollar contract. remove it, go with XP SP2, or Linux. :) Vista will likely be useless until it's own SP1 or SP2 exists, at which time i may consider using it, but not bloody likely.

why are folks victims of a freakin' OS? there are many options out there...
