Is there a way to tell when say for instance your partner is online in sl and anyway to veiw im's or chat records. I have heard there is a way but could not remember how.

Well if its your partner then you could ask them but if you think they are playing about behind your back best to end the partnership. Is trust not one of the main factors in a R/S?

As for seeing if they are OL yes you can by looking at a group you both belong to It will show if they logged on or when they last were on. If you feel the need to spy on them then you need to question the R/s

If you want to look at your own chat and IM logs, you have to

1. Have chat and IM logging enabled. You do this in Preferences, under Communication. There is one checkbox for saving chat logs and one for saving IM logs.

2. Go to the directory where the logs are stored and open the files for reading. You can find that directory at the bottom of the Communication tab.

On Windows computers that directory is

c:\Documents and Settings\[Your user name]\Application Data\Second Life\[Avatar name]

But you can't look at someone else's logs, unless you use the same computer and you have admin rights on that computer. Even if you CAN do that, you shouldn't. I agree with what Windsweptgold said.

Hi, Montie, welcome to the forums. You can buy (or make) avatar tracker scripts that will check to see if an avatar is online anywhere in SL. There are several flavors - look on XStreet for them. For example, you can probably get one that keeps a record of the times a given avatar is online. I made one that checks a list of friends to see if any of them are online whenever I send it an email, and it sends me an email back with that info. Lots of variations.

If you are using it to check up on your partner because you suspect they may be lying to you, that way lies madness, unless your partner agrees to be monitored (which, in this case, I doubt). But, it's your funeral.

As others have said, there is no way for you to read another person's IMs and chats, unless they are using a special client that will report them to you. For example, if the two of you are in a D/S relationship, using a Restrained Life-capable client will get you some degree of control over your partner's communication. Others in this forum know more about that than I do.
