You mean run multiple instances of the viewer at the same time?
It's exactly the same in Vista as in XP. Just add -multiple to the command line of the shortcut. If you already know how to do that in XP, you should know how to do it in Vista, but just in case, here's the step-by-step:
1. Right click on your Second Life desktop shortcut, and hit Properties.
2. In the dialog that pops up, the Shortcut tab should automatically be selected. If it's not, click on it now.
3. Next to where it says "Target:" you'll see a field you can type in. Right now, it probably says one of the following:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe"
-OR-
"C:\Program Files (x86)\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" --channel "Second Life Release" -multiple--channel "Second Life Release"
After whatever is already there, just type a space, and then type -multiple. The target line should now look like this:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" -multiple
Or like this:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" --channel "Second Life Release" -multiple
4. Click Apply. This is the only part that may vary slightly from XP. If you have User Account Control* enabled (which you would, by default), Vista will prompt you to allow administrator rights to complete the change. This is a security feature, designed to prevent outside hackers from making changes to your system. Just click to continue.
Now you're all set to run more than one viewer instance at a time. Enjoy.
*FYI: Despite the overblown exaggerations and wild imaginings of the "I'm a Mac/I'm a PC" ad campaign and its followers, UAC is actually a really handy feature. Granted, it's a little annoying for the first week or so after Vista is first installed, but after it's had enough time to learn how you use your computer, it's barely noticeable. It only pops up when very unexpected things happen (like the kind of thing we just did, the changing of a command line, which is not something anyone does very often).
But still, if you'd rather not have it pop up at all, you can always turn it off. Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Turn User Account Control On or Off -> uncheck -> Use UAC to help protect your computer -> click OK. Note, UAC will pop up one last time, to make sure it was really you who tried to turn it off, and not an outside hacker. Click to continue, and then you'll never see it pop again.
