I've seen this before, but figured I was just wrong...until today.
I'm absolutely sure this morning I had 41 private messages, in spite of the fact that I don't have anywhere near 41 actual messages. I got a mail today that I had received one...so, 42. I went to the forums to look, because I remembered I thought hte count was often wrong...and it said I had 43. I recieved only one mail, and indeed there was only one new private message.
bleargh.

I do not know that this is your problem or not, but the count of private messages includes all messages you have sent, unless you clear out your sent items folder.

Interesting, but still leaves the matter of why I had 41, received one message/mail, and then had 43.
However, I had no idea (it's not intuitive) that replies or sent messages were part of your overall PM total.
