Troubleshooting SL
What make and model of motherboard, CPU and RAM do you have? What combination of RAM do you have? What version of Windows are you running? _____________________

Sorry
running winxp comp is a Dell Dimension 8300 with 1 GB Ram and graphics is a Radeon 9800. All were standard with the comp from Dell. Only non standard is that I have recently reinstalled XP and used the ATI Catalyst video driver. |

Are your drivers up to date? (Sound and chipset, I'm thinking,)

Hi there Chase.
I looked for any crash reports from your account and could not find any. Are you able to log in at all? If not, can you provide a more complete description of what is happening? If you are able to log in, please turn on crash reporting in your viewer by turning on the 'Edit|Preferences|General|Automatically Report Crashes' and contact support@secondlife.com. |

I get those memory read errors all the time on my laptop. I'm 99% sure it has something to do with the ATI drivers. I'll jump in ecstatic joy if someone comes up with a fix.

What version are your video drivers, Dervish? Have you tried the Omega Drivers?

Thanks Phoenix
Should be a crash log there now. Seems to me that this is happening to lots of peeps, yet catalyst drivers are what Lindens recommend for ATI cards. My comp came withthe ATI and I am not throwing it away cause of this game. Surely Lindens can perhaps recomend what settings we should be using on the drivers. Getting quite frustrated here. |

I tried something diffrent tonight and played the game in the full screen mode instead of in a window and only crashed once in about 4 hours in world. This was after trying all sorts of other recommendations in these forums over the past 3 days. My one crash was the memory error though.
I don't know if its a permanent fix, but it helped tonight. It was much better then crashing every 15 minutes like I was doing this weekend. |

That's interesting, Simmy. Have you tried memtest86 to check if your RAM is good?

I have the crash reports. The report indicates that the crash is in the ati driver. We will see what we can do.
Thank you. |

I have installed the Omega drivers now. Will not know if that fixes it until this evening.

Originally posted by Dervish Feaver Installed the Omega drivers last night. No crashes so far. ![]() I was using the latest Omega drivers and experiencing these memory read errors, too. I tried swapping the (2) 512MB memory boards but it didn't make a difference. Then I noticed ATI released the Catalyst 4.9 drivers. I uninstalled the Omega, then installed 4.9. My system went back to complete lockup again. After removing 4.9 and going back to the latest Omega drivers, I'm back to the memory errors and no more freezing. It seems to me the errors started back when 1.5 was released. The only other idea I had was to get a bigger power supply. Even though 250W should be enough for 2 HDs, 2 CDs, the motherboard and my ATI 9600XT, I've been told a 500W would be better in the long run. Especially if I'm interested in replacing my 9600XT (128MB) for the 512MB boards due out next month or so. My L$.02 worth. ![]() |

Wadester, be careful about which PSU you buy. There are some very unreliable power supplies out there, billed as "500W", but they're actually more like 350 if you go by the metric that a more reputable company uses. And not a GOOD 350, either. I recommend Antec and Enermax. They're both excellent brands.
When buying a PSU with a specific video card in mind, you'll want to look at the output of the +12V rail. As a guideline, 15A is the very lowest you'll want to see on a PSU intended to power a card like a Geforce 6800. 20A is plenty. Most Enermax PSUs now have two seperate +12V rails, so as long as their combined output is high enough, you should be fine. _____________________

I'm a techie but don't know much about power -- very useful information. ![]() Wade |

See this thread for more information on power supplies and why sketchy brands can get you in trouble. (Though unfortunately, for all the PSU research Doug Linden and I did, it doesn't seem to have helped anyone any.)

It seems that with the latest SL patch (1.5.4) this error isn't occuring anymore...at least with Simmy. Chase, you still having issues?

hmmm
I feel guilty lol. I ditched my ATI card and bought a GeForce 6800!!! Lindens said my crash logs indicated it was the ATI drivers. However I find it amazing that a game company sees hundreds of threads about one of the worlds leading video cards giving hundreds of players problems and doesnt really communicate to players about it. I havnt seen any threads from Lindens about recomended settings for ATI cards or in fact and info to say that there is a problem with SL and ATI. |

I spoke too soon. Simmy is still having the same issue with her 9700 Mobility.
