I got a free tree/plant and put it in my yard, but now I'm unable to move it or delete it, I can't even select it. It's not a nice tree - it's an eyesore - and I need to get rid of it. I don't even know how many prims it's using.
Does anyone know what I can do to get rid of it?

Maybe you have some of the Tools menu selection options set wrong by mistake, such as "Select Only Movable Objects", or "Select By Surrounding".

Probably a system tree then, those can be hard to tell if you've grabbed them since they don't highlight the same way as normal prims, and drag-selecting doesn't like to cooperate. Your cue that you snagged it is that the position arrows will appear (or you get the pie menu you wanted).
Try to alt-click zoom in on the tree, and aim for low on the trunk, near the "roots".

The tree isn't exactly a tree - more like some sort of bush or something. It's impossible to select - I tried your suggestions with no success. When I alt/click/zoom, I go past the tree to what is behind it. That's why I say it's like a phantom, it seems like it's not really there. When I do it near the very bottom, and I right click it, I get the "About Land" and "Go Here" and "Edit Terrain" options in the pie chart, no matter where I right click. And the stems area is constantly moving like leaves or something. Here is a photo of it so that you can see how it's different: http://lambpcsolutions.com/phantom_tree.pngIt's the purple bush/tree with the light green stems(?) where a trunk would be on a tree. Here is the SLURL to the spot where you can view the tree/bush thing: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Cold%20Harbour/136/17/54I tried using the SLURL and had to turn around to see it. Any help to remove this eyesore would be appreciated. Thanks

When you first tried to delete or take the tree did you get the pie menu and able to select delete or take? I've had that happen to me and the object just didn't go away like expected........any further attempts to do anything with the object were futile since it was as if the object was simply not there. Well, as it turned out, it was not really there as far as the servers were concerned........it was "ghosted". A sim restart fixed it.

The reason you can't remove the tree is because it's a particle tree <g> and the prim that's generating the particle tree is just below the ground. So pan and tilt your camera below the ground near the tree until you see the prim and take it back to inventory. You may have to disable camera constraints;
1. If the “advanced menu” is not already showing at the top of your screen do ctrl-alt-D to bring it up.
2. Click “advanced” and go down the list.
3. Uncheck “disable camera restraints”.

[EDIT] Just went to have a look out of curiosity. As MarkByron said, just under the ground surface is a kind of flat cone-shaped gray prim, that is generating the particles.

You guys are awesome!! It worked. But it was very strange- it took awhile to find the cone and once I did and I took it back to inventory (and forgot to look for the name - so now I don't know where it is in my inventory to delete it) then it took quite awhile to disappear, it looked like it was trying to stay and fight leaving (very strange) it was wiggling in the air for awhile, but it finally disappeared. Thank you to everyone that responded to my question.
