Game runs slow/choppy on my decent machine, even with graphics turned down.

So i started yesterday, and my framerate seems to be way slower than it should be. I can run doom 3 on ultra and everything runs pretty happy, but in SL, i am getting pretty consistant 3-4 FPS...jumps up to a whopping 10-15 if i go stare out into the ocean to cut down the poly count, which seems awful low considering i'm staring at virtualy nothing.

my machine:
P4 2.53 GHZ
Nvidia gforce fx 5700 ultra (128 mb) with latest (july) official drivers. also tried newer beta drivers.
768 mb ram
XP pro + SP2 *any SP2 issues?*
comcast cable

i understand that since normal users can place objects in the world, there's going to be some inneficient extra polygons and such, and that there's going to be occasional lag from streaming all that world data to me, but still, i've turned all the "slow" graphics options off, lowered draw distance, all that good stuff. none really seem to help much. in fact most of the "slow" options seem to have no impact at all on my framerate. also, i notice that my mouse cursor always moves nice and smooth, even when the 3d environment is chopping along at 3fps, giving me the impression that my computer isn't putting as much effort into running the game engine as it should. my framerate also doesn't improve any even if i sit and wait for it to finish loading everything around me. I have noticed a small improvement when going to an island with NO other people on it, but still not as much as i would expect.

so, what gives? is this sort of chop normal? any reason turning down graphics options doesn't seem to help much? suggestions?

Dearest Nyak, other than buying land directly from ME, at DISCOUNT PRICES!!

I suggest turning off 'local lighting' and reducing your draw distance somewhat.

Has always helped me as I scurry across the grid, expanding my empire!!

What are your graphics settings? Generally, the two that affect speed the most are draw distance and local lighting, with object detail/avatar detail/tree detail/land detail having a lesser effect.

I think I have a bad script, but something is killing my FPS, on my SIM.

Any good way to deterime, exactly what drains the frames?

Check your connection: http://www.dslreports.com

I had problems with Comcast all weekend. Slow (Down from 2.8MB to 166K) and lots of lag.
