Hello,
I plan to host my own radio station from my server but, I need to know what protocol or, media streaming server standards are supported? Is the shoutcast the only standard supported or, is there support for MMS and/or, RTSP and, other similar standards and, protocols?
thanks,
Beta

We know that icecast and shoutcast work. Anything that transmits a plain MP3 or Ogg Vorbis stream via HTTP will also work... for example, if you put an mp3 on a webserver and set your land parcel to http://myserver.com/mysong.mp3, it will play when you enter your parcel. There are no plans to support MMS or RTSP.

Mark, I tried sticking a "Welcome" mp3 on my web site and putting its URL (that works in a browser) into my land's settings... But no one heard anything. You sure straight mp3s from a web server work right?
I left the land settings in even though it didnt seem to work. Southern half of Celadon.

Hello Tiger,
Yesturday (wednesday) during the server (sim) moves I had some issues with getting direct MP3's from working. It does seem to work fine though. Try relogging after setting up the land settings if no sound occurs. also if your hosting yourself, make sure you have enough bandwith for it.
Something else to try which will insure your URL is correct is try and open the URL in your media player. you can usually open your default media player by typing the URL in the run dialog box from your start menu.

Heh. It's supposed to work. If you tried something yesterday, and it didn't work, try it again today... yesterday was not a good day. If it still doesn't work, then there's probably something wrong somewhere. For sure, a 128 or 64kbit MP3 encoded in stereo served off of an Apache webserver running on Linux will work. Everything else probably will, but that's what I just tested.

I think I used 160. I'll downsample and see how it goes. http://www.fluffandsuch.com/sl/welcome_1.mp3

Mark,
If I can only set up one MP3 then how can I host more then one MP3 to play each after the other? is there someway to hand off the URL from each MP3 or, another way to script (either LSL or, some HTML/XML/Other script) playing more then just one song? I mean, other land owners can play more then one song without reconfiguring their land settings.
Thanks,

Beta: That's what icecast/shoutcast do. They stream the MP3s sequentially to the client. See http://www.icecast.org/ or http://www.shoutcast.com/ for details. BTW, this is where the confusion re: playlists came from... with icecast or shoutcast, the server process controls the playlist... the playlist is never transmitted to the client.

Right.

Mark,
True. I understand the confusion as well. It would be nice to be able to utilize the playlist without a server. Being able to access media without a streaming server can promote more MP3/music possibilities as well as less resources for the hosting group or, individual. Maybe a suggestion for implimentation of a future version of SL is in order?

As always, we welcome your feedback and suggests for features, over in the Feature Suggestions forum. Folks here do read that forum, and pull features from it for later releases.

I did change my mp3 to 128, but still no dice. I don't think my site's host is running Linux. ASP and so forth going on there. Would the problem be there, with me, or with SL?

Probably with the SL client. Can you post a link to your MP3? I'll see if I can tell what's going wrong.
