Most ATI cards have a lot of troubles running second life, you have to check to see if you have the up to date driver then also check to see if your card can run SL.
I had an HD 2600 XT ati and it would crash 30 seconds into logging on.

Going back to Catalyst driver version 8.5 solved all my problems. SL runs smooth as silk with my X1950Pro. No more crashes either. Linden Labs seems to have problems keeping up with ATI drivers.

??

I believe it might be ATI having problems keeping up with LL. :) Both major graphics cards manufacturers get behind the curve with what must be built into their drivers to do what SL requires of the cards. It's the OpenGL part of the drivers that give most of the headaches........and ATI lags behind nVidia on that part.

But, LL is not even trying to keep up with ATI.......nor are they trying to keep up with nVidia. And, since in the large scope of things, SL is small potatoes for graphics card manufacturers I doubt either are worried about our driver issues. You might post on their forums to see if your problem is widespread......I think you might even get more help there than here.

Being LL's graphics engine is 8 years old this is not likely. ;)

Most game or graphics intensive programs developed for use on personal computers are rendered using DirectX.......not OpenGL. That is why there is such a huge discripency with gaming programs that will work on Macs and Linux boxes. It's not LL's 8 year old rendering engine.........it's the fact that when close to 80% of the computers in the world use Windows, the developers are going to develop to whatever that rendering engine is first...........before they focus on the other 20%. DirectX is Microsoft.

Sorry, your argument is not pertinent. OpenGL is as up to date as DirectX.......SL is an OpenGL program. The manufacturers do play to OpenGL too.........just not the first thing they think of when they develop drivers and software. LL developed the game...........the hardware people can support it or not. LL cannot develop a game to ATI's driver strategy, nor nVidia's. That sort of follows the example of Airlines flying to various cities and countries throughout the world and saying the Airlines are not keeping up with the airports. It's kind of the other way around. :)

I disagree... All other games work around what the cards can do.... SL should be no different, well if they actually want people to play SL anyway and not give up frustrated.

So SL should have gone with DirectX instead of OpenGL. :) That would probably make life easier on me..............but, hey, try selling that to the Mac and Linux people. :)

Heh, they're having trouble keeping up with the nVidia ones, too :D
