I've been having nothing but trouble with animations in preview and I thought Doug Linden would have worked on it by now and help put a hold on the update. Not everyone wanted to try the preview and not everyone would have caught all the bugs. I'm experincing crashes both hard system and to the desktop type since getting 1.4 live. Someone jumped the gun here. Is anyone able to play without any problems right now?

I cant even log in. Receive message program not responding then it takes me 5-6 tries to end it.

Is anyone else having this problem??:(

I am afraid
06-16-2004 17:13
I am hoping the bugs are being worked out. I am afraid to log on and then down load the upgrade. Everything worked just fine for me with the old version. If I try the new version, will SL customer service hold my hand to get me online again, or will they send me to Knowledge Base, which they recommend and where you can't log on to find answers to your questions?
*big sigh*
What should I do? Wait for bugs to be worked out? Or download a buggy 1.4 new version?
I am lost in the SL upgrade sea.
Please advice me.
I will be brave, if you think I should be.

If you don't log on, you'll never know if it works. If it doesn't work, the worst that's going to happen is that you'll have to wait a day or two for the 1.4.1 and 1.4.2 to fix problems.

With the exception of what I believe is a solitary animation-related issue, I haven't had any major problems at all yet.

Someone jumped the gun? I'd say so.

For 1.3 we had, what, a WEEK'S notice for the upgrade to 1.3? For 1.4 we had, what, five hours?

I think the rush is because of the anniversary coming up on the 23rd.

- Let people get cusom animations in place for the parade/party.

- Gives them a week of "wide beta" to work out kinks before the parade/party.

Honestly, how'd you feel if they'd waited until the 22nd to release 1.4, and you had a float entered in the parade, but you couldn't log in or stay logged in?

Additional note:

In retrospect, this is probably the reason we only have half an XML-RPC implementation.

Yes, I'm gonna harp on that for awhile. :D

I havent really had any problems so far. Some teleport issues right after 1.4 was released, but thats about it.

FYI. 1.4.1 update is now available.

Here's the info -

Second Life 1.4.1 update is out.

Second Life 1.4.1 is out. This is a required client-only patch, which mostly fixes bugs.

- Fixed a crash if you tracked a landmark location from the map and flew there.
- Fixed a potential crash when deleting inventory items.

So far, 1.4 has been a terrible disappointment to me. The ultra-slow rezzing of objects (most of the time i don't see objects i'm running into anymore), crashes to the desktop about once or twice an hour, and now with the 1.4.1 upgrade, the new feature of 5% - 25% packet loss. Joy.

I have lost more packets in the last 5 minutes than in the preceding several months.

1.3 NEVER **NEVER** crashed for me.

This version, this "new and improved" "upgrade" is crashing for me every 4-5 minutes. I'm getting NOTHING done.

To make it even better, the crash logger completely hard-locks my system, forcing me to press the reset button. Having to do a hard-reset every 4-5 minutes is not good for my computer.

1.4 WAS NOT READY FOR RELEASE.

I'm getting the exact same problem having to reset the computer. What kind of vid card do you have?? I have a Radeon 9600xt.

Lucky you... 1.3 was horribly unstable.

I have two comps. One with nVidia, one with ATI graphic card.

Both were working fine on 1.3, but now only the comp with the nVidia card can be used to play. (1.4.1)

The ATI box is rendered useless.

I've been trying X times to fly to Magenta Mall to fix one of my vendors, but it crashes everytime I see a flinch of the mall. Every time, no matter what I set in display options.

The box with the nVidia card has no problems whatsoever, esp. after the 1.4.1 patch.

None of the x.0 releases seem ready for release. Here are the troubles I encountered so far with 1.4:

The announcment and release were very hasty with a few hours of pre-announcement, and the latest 1.3.x release did not offer to auto-update or even tell me there was a version mis-match, it just crashed to desktop during loading. After three crashes I checked the forums, surprise! update.

1.4 has broken Hawk's entire fleet of aircraft (which were bought by many).

1.4 has broken particles in some unspecified way. I had commissioned some of Jopsy's amazing particles for aurora over Seacliff at no small price. They are now dead (not complaining to you Jopsy).

There was a "preview pile-on" request to stress test the servers prior to release. From the postings on the forum it failed miserably. I would have expected some fixes and another pile-on test. That never happened.

The fact that simple teleports in 1.4.0 fail makes is *appear* that there is no one doing simple testing of the most basic functions.

The 1.4.1 update complains that 1.4.1 is already installed (even when 1.4.0 is definitely installed). Fortunately it allows you to install anyway. Another action that bespeaks no testing.

1.4.1 Doesn't fix the particles in the aurora or Eddie's blood splat, I didn't test further.

1.3 broke almost all of my scripts for reasons that have still not been determined (even single state scripts). I had diligently make high-quality bug reports (i.e. this is very repeatable, here's the object that stopped working) during preview. They were closed without explanation. I've ceased reporting bugs.

They added "The player, as part of the new Quality Assurance Program is now required to be an alpha tester for all new releases." to the Terms of Service.

I made the last one up. My computer is vanilla as can be because I hate unreliability (intel mobo, nvidia 4200, etc.). Massive growth and low quality releases seems to be a fine way for LL to shoot themselves in the foot. When I joined SL at version 1.1 it seemed pretty clear what their objectives were. Now I am just baffled.

PC Players Go into your Program Files\Second Life program directory and delete your Cache folder.

Mac Players Go into your home folder's Library/Application Support/Second Life directory and delete your Cache folder.

This will solve such things as crashing when you try to move and other bugs. Not EVERYTHING, but it helps a great deal.
