Hi everyone, I'm a newbie (just found out about SL last week), and so far I'm really enjoying SL. Anyhow, I just tried to post an event in the events calendar but it didn't take. I don't own land (I'm not premium), so I followed the instructions to use Linden Land that's marked as a Gathering Place (I tried the Chalet Linden).
I was thinking it'd be cool to have a little event tonite for everyone on the East Coast or Central time who are watching the season finale of LOST on ABC. I don't know how many Lost fans are using SL, but it'd be neat to be able to chat on SL about the stuff going on in the episode. (Unfortunately, the epi runs later in the later time zones.)
But I can't seem to post the event in the event calendar. I tried using both Safari and Internet Explorer. I'm on a Mac - could that be the problem?
Thanks for any help. I hope it's ok for me to post this question in this category of the forums -- I didn't really see another place that applied to event stuff.

Hi Haya! Welcome to Second Life! Here are step-by-step instructions on how to post an event: 1. Go here2. Click the link " Add Event" 3. Read the rules, and click "I Agree" at the bottom of the page. 4. Fill out the form to post your event. The form, explained: a. Event Name: This is what will appear on the Event Calendar in Find as the "Title" of your event. Many folks get annoyed with gratuitous use of Caps or special charachters - I'd just simply give your event a name like "Lost - Season finale gathering" or something like that. b. Description: This is where you can go into detail with what your event is all about. When folks click an event on the event calendar, what you type here shows up on the left side of the screen as a description. Note: There's a bug right now if you use double quotes (" in your post. Avoid them, and your event should post just fine! c. Date: The date your event will be held. This should default to today's date. Change it if you need to. The system wont let you post events in the past. d. Starts At: Select the time your event will start in Game Time. (US Pacific Time). e. Duration: Select a duration for your event. Your choices are anywhere from 10 minutes to 3 hours. f. Cover Charge: Most events these days select 'No'. Only select this if you want folks to have to pay you to attend your event. g. Location: Select (from the dropdown) the location you wish you host your event. This is where folks will teleport to if they click the teleport button directly from your listing. Only Linden-approved gathering places, gathering places of folks you have a friends card for, or your own land that's a gathering place will show up here. h. Mature Event: Select this checkbox if your event will have mature (sexual/violent) content. Once you've got that all filled out, just click "Save Event" to post. That's it! Note that there's a limit of 5 events you can post in a single day, and you must be present for your entire event, or have a designated host to take your place. Good Luck!

Travis, that's a smashing masterpiece and a followup to such a well-asked question by haya. I'd also like to add a big smile that we Lindens DO encourage Residents to host events at Linden Locations such as Chalet Linden, the Infohubs, the Oak Grove and Pooley Stages, and more! They will appear in everyone's Location list. STICKIED!

Event Calendar Useless!
06-03-2007 10:54
Free posting are for events where there is not likely to be any money exchagned on either side! Book readings, arts exhibits, openings of public venues, music concerts or stage performances by actors. AA meetings or Dragon club meetings or the Daughters of the Confederacy coffee clatch! It does not mean yard sales or Zyngo or Slingo or best animal avatar contest at "The Farm Nightclub" of best chrome spikes at "Metal mania Disco and sports bar! If they want to run that stuf fine but make them pay to advertise it.
The free event calendar should be reserved EXCLUSIVELY for in world activites and EVENTS that are non reccurring and free to the public and are not for the purpose of selling someting or any other sort of commerce including "NEw Mall Opens" or "Land for Sale"! WHO CARES! IF you are running a business then advertise and stop exploiting the community activities PAY FOR YOUR ADVERTISING! Land being for sale is not an event! Houses for rent are not events!
Having said that and being a mall owner and an event promoter in world myself I will ad this about the "Grand Openings" and the "we are giving away a free crapload of Lindens from a sploder" because its easy and it attracts the lowest common denominator of traffic kind of mentality and "live dj" as an event mentality. GET CREATIVE!
IF you want to promote a opening of a new mall then throw a party, have fireworks, a live band, and truely give away some nice prizes! Spend your advetising and marketing budget! Do something FUN!

At least until anyone can figure our why it will not allow this copy:
ATTENTION! Shoppers and the just curious! The Tuzandi Bazaar,is now open and to celebrate the opening of the newest and maybe the only complex of its’ kind, the Festival Square Merchants group is having a huge grand opening event!

Events and land ownership conflicts -Please help
09-12-2007 06:18
Hi all, thank you for taking the time to read this.
I have an issue, I am an officer of a group that owns land but none of the officers can advertise events. - What permissions/abilities or whatever do we need to get fixed?
The land is a public access parcel on a private island. The owners of the island are also owners of the group.
In the past the officers had permissions for events but the owners made a raft of changes and somehow have inadvertantly made the event listing option unavailable.
One factor that seems be relevant is the issue of landing points. Changes to the landing points occurred at the same time as the event listing capability loss. The landing point for the private island as a whole is within the public access parcel of land. Also when the landing point for the island was moved to within the parcel- the parcel lost it's original landing point. When searching for the parcel, the result comes up as the island. Could this have an impact on the permissions?
I'd like to be able to provide a definitive answer to the owners of the group and the land as to how they need to set this up so we can have a funtioning events space within the island.
UPDATE: landmarks are important....moving the estate landmark to outside the parcel freed things up again

I also had a question about this. I was thinking of holding a club meeting at my house and I was wondering if that would be possible (assuming I have permission from my landlord and such)? I'm asking because my land would not be classified as public so would that make it not possible to post events?

Land won't show up in Location list.
12-19-2008 05:45
Ok, this is dumb. Why doesn't my land show up in the Location dropdown when trying to add an event? The land is enabled for public access and I've set the Landing Point. How do I list it as a gathering place? Doesn't seem very intuitive. Thanks much.

Location finally worked
12-19-2008 05:52
Ok, my land showed up in the Location drop down. It took a few minutes after I set the Landing Point for it to come up. Now I can post my event.

From: Elysian String I sure wish mine was that easy to fix My parcel still doesn't display in the drop down box. Have you set a landing point and set teleport routing to be landing point rather than anywhere?

01-11-2009 02:30
I am trying to post an education event in German for our German residents in SL. But it keeps saying invalid description. Am I not able to post in German? I have seen posts in German. Whats the use of posting a german class in english, for german residents that don't speak, read or write english?

From: Kaiserw Kirby I have problems writing events. Getting a message all the time. " Please correct the following lease enter a valid Z coordinate." I am having the same problem The pulldown list of parcels DOES NOT include Z coordinates Therefore it is impossible to list an event. Please fix this. Either ixnay the need for a Z coord, or add it in to the listing of the parcels FFS

IT uses the parcel landing point to come up with the Z, and it doesn't like landing points over 768 (never mind that the build height has been 4096 for along time now!). If you scoot the parcel landing point down below 768 temporarily, you can get the event listed, then you can put the landing point back to where you prefer it.
