In a forthcoming land upgrade I am considering having a 'live music' venue, and I wondered what the 'etiquette' is on such events.
I'm aware of the technicalities like the shoutcast stream, hosting, advertising etc etc.
However, what about cost? Most musicians have a tip jar out - so do I still pay them for coming, charge them for the use of my premises, leave it free and just make do with the increased traffic (now that dwell has gone)?
Just curious. I don't want to shoot myself in the foot before my venue even opens, because I'm sure that musicians talk between themselves and I wouldn't like to alienate myself from the community that I hope will patronise my venue.
This isn't likely to be something that will happen every evening, so current venues needn't be concerned, in fact it'll probably be a multipurpose venue that will be used for discussions, presentations, maybe classes as well as music.
Any pointers gratefully received.

Wanna buy my 4608 of land with my 2 venues?! ) --- I'd be happy to meet up in-world and talk to you about owning/running a SL club sometime.

Part of it depends on who the musician is, and for that matter the DJ, etc. 1. Does the muscian have a following and will that following come to their event? 2. Is that crowd liable to spend money at your venue? 3. What methods do you have short of charging admission to recoup costs at your venue/events? Do you provide the stream? If you do frequent events having your own stream means you can negotiate a lower price for the performer. But so far I've found rates charged for live musicians range from DJ rates-200L/hr up to 2000L/hr. 2000L/hr performers have their own CDs and are actual musicians whereas the 200L/hr guys are "just starting out people". And caveat emptor, go audition any performer before you hire them, you don't want the "live band" showing up like they did at my place once lol and it turned out it was 3 jokers playing air guitar with wave files being the music

As with all things I do in SL, my desire was just to provide a venue, rather than it to be an income stream.
I just wasn't sure if there was an 'established protocol' for these things.
My ideal would be, I guess, that I simply provide the venue, the musician collects from tip jars, I benefit from traffic, and hopefully my venue and surrounding area get a reputation as a place for people to meet and have a good time.
Whether that's realistic or not, I guess remains to be seen.

Lewis if the band or musician isn't established then I think letting them stick out a tip jar is fine for their payment. I can even see a niche for that, since I'd love to have a place where I could check out a performer or dj first before paying 'em Big cost there besides whatever you have put into your land and venue time is the stream. If you have questions IM me in game.
