I know i am not the only one who has had this problem your running a contest for your club/mall/church what ever your thing is
and then 5 minutes before voting soem one comes in enters the contest which we all want any way but as soon as voting starts there are 20 new people popping in and voting for that one person
how do you combat that is there a board out there that you have to be in range a certain amount of time in order to vote
i saw it bad today with 16 people in the area entered in the contest then there was 45 votes
any help suggestions or idea's greatly appreciated

There isn't a board .. yet. Someone is in the process of making it. In the meanwhile, the club I work for has the hostesses take votes by IM. It's easy to check chat history for people who've been there the whole event. Especially if the one hosting is on the ball. Good luck

I take votes by IMs also. People are less likely to "cheat" if they have to IM the owner of the place. Another thing we did when we had a similar issue: give a prize for being the 1st to attend and the last to leave. Also, vary when the voting is, and don't give them too much time to vote. One club I know gives the participants 120 seconds. It's a larger, laggy club, so tp'ng ppl doesn't help as it takes longer than that to rezz the boards.

repeat after me... sensors are your friend
record any av that touches to the list, then a minute or two before the entry part closes (or before voting begins), run a few sensor sweeps from various points (to combat LSL's limitation of 16 objects sensed) and then only allow those already in the list to vote...
even better, make everyone click, and choose whether or not to enter via dialog... capture all clicks before voting begins, and only allow those voters
there is a way to detect and store new arrivals and their time there, but it gets much more complex for the person scripting.

Instead of having participants or people in the club voting, have a judging panel who make the decsion, that way you stop it being a popularity contest! That is what I have started doing to stop situations like that.
The judges decision is final!

I use the Top Tank event board and set it to everyone that gets votes share in the prize money. This way the contest spammers can try to get all the money but the people with ligit votes also get their fair share.

I can only speak for our CobraTech Contest Board system. We acted meanwhile after long tests and many discussions on how to go on this and we released an update for the V2.1x series which contains several measures to make those contest cheats very hard. * Last minutes joins can be prohibited by the host by disallowing "join", * the board can be set to allow only group members to vote, * potential winners have to be in your place in oder to win, * internal system to dramatically reduce so called "bot votes". Sensors are no option since they can only sense 16 AVs and a network of sensors will make the setup and handling very complicated for the board owners.

One Club's Policy

At one club I go to the boards are closed 30 minutes before the voting. That seems to work at the contests I've been to there. I've only seen one contest there when people showed up at the end to vote. It was a sim failure day and all the late comers were club members.

I had this happen also. The one porting all his friends in was not even dressed for the event. I made an announcement that this will not be tolerated & you will be disqualified. Fortunatly, I can go into admin mode and tally before any winners are announced and paid. I turned off the board and paid the deserving 2nd place winner 1st place. This dude was pissed when I announced the winner and proceeded to push people. He was then banned.

Wow you guys are forgetting the OBVIOUS low tech answer.. almost no scripts or items required. Step 1: Either physically hand out, or have a "Notecard Giver" give out "Vote Forms" (no copy obviously) during a specified period of the event. (Say the first 30 minutes or so). If you have a notecard giver script you could even program it to easily turn on/off the giving out of notes. Step 2: Each person Fills in the name of the person they want to vote for and hands it to the event coordinator. Once turned in, vote is final. Step 3: Add up all the votes manually. Now sure... this would be better with a board.. and you could even script one of those notecard 'accepter' thingys to perhaps read the card, and populate a board once they are turned in.. but all those things cost $L or have decent scripting knowledge. The 1 form/vote per person works well and relieves the coordinator from having to remember names and times.. they just give em out at a certain time only, and collect throughout the night. Anyway.. tis just an idea

Vote Swarming
11-20-2007 06:59
I run a club at Atlantis Island and have seen a massive increase in this activity of late. In order to try and stop it ended up creating my own contests boards 2 months ago. They only allow group memebers to enter and vote. You then have the club hosts give out group tags to thoese people known to be not bots (i.e. they talk for a while and have been in the club for 10 for 15 mins and interact with people). Prevent people who are not at the club location from reciving votes or winning at the end. After 30 mins of being away from the club delete their details from the board and disallow them to re-enter. Also allow selective club management to see who is voting for whom as it occurs - its quite easy to spot the vote rigging this way and then simply remove the bot from the board, dont make a show and dance about it, just remove them. In all the time i have been doing this not one bot has noticed/complained about being removed.
Ive found this 3 prong approach works really, other methods are either time consuming or irritating for real people in the club.
Btw, ill will put up the board on slx this weekend ( i wanted to make sure they fully worked first ).

The latest version (v1.06) of our Wasted Jack Contest Pro Board also has the capability of optionally restricting voting to group members only and/or to contestants only (all combinations are possible). For more info, visit: http://world.secondlife.com/place/550cc6f2-5f4d-a509-ebad-9e0ccb7f2e80 .

This is what we do at Rose & Thorn, start the voting at random and give only 5 minutes for voting. So far so good, but if I see a lot of people TPing in during that 5 minutes, i'll lower it to 2 or 3 minutes. Sue, what a great idea to give a prize for first to come and last to leave!! Grrrrrreat!!
