i know i'm not alone here. my favorite events to attend as a newbie, and a budding builder, were the weekly (several a week, actually) show & tell events. usually hosted by misty rhodes, they were quite popular until, apparently, linden decided to no longer support/fund the events.

i logged in sometimes just to see what the regulars had been working on since the last S&T. i miss them. and i wish someone would take it up again.

I do too. Do you think they've been discontinued just because of the change in event support? Is there any other way to encourage their continuance?

While it is difficult to show a causal relationship, there certainly is a correlation between removing event sponsorhip and the disappearance of show-and-tell events. As this happened at the same time that ratings became more expensive, this was a double whammy to show-and-tell, as now you can't even count on getting some ratings for your skill as a builder.

My Coda cohorts adn I have been talking about hosting show-and-tell events, but we would need to come up with a sponsorship model that enabled us to award at least a modest prize to the winners. We aren't in this to make money, so we aren't structured to have an income stream that we can dip into to fund such prizes. I would be happy to host a show-and-tell, but I'm not going to pay for it out of my pocket, and I doubt people would come if they had to pay an entry fee just to show their stuff.

We have been able to make a sponsorship model work well for our large-scale build competitions. I think our events are appealing to advertisers because our contests generate a lot of traffic (our waterfall contest gave us TWO favorites spots at the same time) and we can give them advertising space for a week or two, depending how long our contest runs. Note that we don't make any profit on our events - we're in them just for the fun of it, and having sponsors provide prizes money and items means we can break even on the events (not counting our tier fees, that is).

But a show-and-tell that lasts for only an hour and may have only a dozen attendees is more challenging to sell to sponsors. I'm not saying we can't figure something out, but I fear having to resort to plastering the event area with so much advertising that it would distract and detract from the event itself.

I understand LL had reasons for changing the event funding model. I would have preferred keeping some amount of Linden funding of non-educational events and doing away with rating bonuses (and costs) entirely.

I'll be holding a Show and Tell tomorrow, Sunday (10th of April), everyone's welcome!

I can only hold a few, because first, my time available for doing events is limited, and second, I'm not infinitely rich :-)

L$ 300 in prizes tomorrow -- this is what I can offer.
