Who do Lindens allow so many non-events?

The majority of events listed on the calendar are non-events, just businesses trying to attract customers by a daily, sometimes many-times-a-day barrage of sales-pitches. It takes so much work for me just to report one abuse of the calendar, but it seems like a Linden could easily walk through the calendar every day and delete/punish those flagrant violations. "SPAM (multiple events posted in a single day that do not comply with the rules above) WILL NOT BE TOLERATED and will be SUBJECT TO DISCIPLINARY ACTION. Please do not use the Events calendar in any way which would inhibit its usefulness to the community at large. Failure to follow these guidelines may result in a SUSPENSION OF YOUR ACCOUNT." For example, Christy Tenk is listing a yard sale at 12AM (to get to the top of the list) tomorrow; she might argue that she is listing "new items" thus the event, but she is listing the exact same items as new on November 28 at 12AM, and many other days in November. I want the calendar to work properly. I am an educator, and I have occasional events for other educators where we discuss specific new topics, but my listings are surrounded by pap, from Zyngo ads to fake grand openings. Lindens--either do something about it, or give us the power to do something about it.

I agree with you 100%. I have almost given up on the events tab because of this. I am glad I don't have a club or a business anymore. I would be SOL.

There was LL talk months ago about adding some kind of rating system to events, that would flag misplaced stuff and automatically hide it pending review (and there were supposed to be checks on the ratings themselves to cut down on the abuse potential there). There has been little mention of it since, so who knows when or even if it will happen.

There were literally like 2 days in 2006 where Lindens actively rooted through the events list and chucked out nonsense. They quickly realized they had better things to do, and it's been a free-for-all ever since.
As a result, most people never even bother peeking at the events listings, so it's just as well.

There's a phrase that describes so many things in SL that it was the inspiration to start a group. A group I never really got off the ground. "It must work, or nobody would do it." Especially events. Event blasts are a major pain in the ass.

Individuals don't look at the event listing (You don't, I rarely do...same with classifieds. Never used them!), but 'people' do, or it wouldn't be worthwhile for people to misuse the system. Oddly enough there's usually interesting stuff in Arts and Entertainment.

I don't doubt that SOME people (unverified newbies with no money) peek at the Events list now and then but I'd be very surprised if the in-world Events listing was the primary method of getting avs in clubs. I'm pretty sure group notices, group chat, conference IMs and word-of-mouth are each more effective. Some people do stuff just because that's what their peers are doing. I still see lots of parcels with names that begin with strings of characters in a foolhardy attempt to bubble to the top of searches. It doesn't work. At all. But lots of people do it.

Actually it's virtually the only way to get me into your club. I look through the events list almost every day. It's quite easy to sift out the rubbish and spot those events that are real and might have some interest. I suspect the event list has a similar weakness to many aspects of SL - LL devised a basically good system, set sensible rules for using it, and then just didn't have either the resources or the will to police it properly.
