im planning on doing a class on water and water effects in SL sometime soonish (a week or 2). my target audience is people that already know how to build, texture, and have some (slight) knowledge of scripts. so this really not a newbie class.
i also plan on using streaming audio so i can talk to the class in realtime instead of trying to type while demonstrating.

anyone have any tips or ideas for doing a class like this?

thanks

jester

rivers would be included, if only as flowing water, similar to waterfalls. rain and snow would be interesting, but my list of stuff to teach is already too long and in working on cutting it down to something manageable for 1 class.
unfortunately the snag is that i cant find a way to talk to the class, streaming audio may work but i cant find free mac software that will let me stream my voice live, audium will do it, but i sound like jester and the chipmunks.

ill let you know when i do the class shadow

Jester, try and IM my buddy DJ Zadoq, he can give you a good overview of streaming and using voice.

And, please put me on your list of notification of the class :D

Yes, please notify me or post again when you are going to have the class. I don't check the event listings anymore and would hate to miss this.

:D thank you all for your interest, i added you all to the list. i am still trying to find a way to be able to talk instead of type.

teamspeak dosent have a mac client
nor does roger wilco
skype dosent support enough people all in one call
ichat under tiger leaves out everyone but mac users (if there are a bunch of mac users interested i can do a class with that, but i want this open to everyone)
and i haven't found any free mac software that works to stream from my mic to the shoutcast server other than audium, but that makes my voice sound like a chipmunk.

have i missed something obvious? anyone know another way that i can talk live to a group of people?

Water Class

Would pseudo-newbies be able to participate? I really want to learn to do waterfalls, etc., but my building skills are "fair to middlin'" at best. . .

good question.

i'm not sure, kinda depends on what your skill level is like, as well as what the rest of the people who show up know. i intend to teach to the level of the class, but of someone says "how do i rez a sphere?" or "how do i put a script in a prim?" they should be in a beginner building class.

i want to do something like i.e. talking about what to do with prims not how to do it, if that makes sense. or in other words if you know something ill teach you more, in specific about water.

the easy way to find out would be to IM me in world and we can get together and talk. :-)

Echinacea, IM me in-world and I will give you Water 101 at the Botanical Gardens. I have waterfalls by 3 different designers, so you can look at some of the differing techniques. I'm usually on around 4pm game time...

Sounds good to me.

I can script a bit in Flash MX, but I haven't done anything with the SL scripting language. I'd still go to the class, however. If I get lost on the scripting portion, I'll bet I could still get ideas on the prim/texture portion. No harm in listening.

Now watch, Jester will teach the thing while I'm at work. :-)

been working on exactly what im gonna teach, the scripting was always gonna be a small part, but i think that even if someone doesn't know any scripting they should be ok, if you know how to script most of what im gonna say will be redundant, if you know a bit you will hopefully understand more, if you don't know any you can ask if you get lost. but im going to keep it basic.

time is a good point, what time/day of the week would people want to do it?

/me goes back to working out how to do streaming audio without paying $40 for software

Hi Jester, I'm interested in attending this class, but I have no advice on using live sound.

Thanks, Fairge

I don't know about streaming voice but i can tell you what i do to avoid typing... and retyping... and retyping.... for the late comers and those who want repeats. I sit down and work up a notecard that breaks it down and simplifies it. The great thing about a notecard is they can refer to it over and over, and pass it to friends. They can use it to work at their own pace. They don't feel pressured to keep up. I do this in my classes and it works great, all i type now is short help lines for those who are very new. Saves tons of time.
