There Should Be Weekly Linden Labs Hosted Building And Scripting Classes

I myself would like to learn how to build and script but since i'm on dial up I have problems. Maybe if there were small classes held somewhere in Second Life that are hosted by a staff member of Linden Labs it could help out those who do have dial up.

I like to learn on my own but I have no idea where the sand box is and I can't own land due to my account being Basic. But this would be a good idea for those who can't own land or don't want to ask for help.

Lots of sandboxes about, Cordova is the most widely used one, can find it in the map drop down..

As for Linden hosted classes I think there used to be some.. But now adays if a Linden hosted a building/scripting class the sim'd be full before it started, no good for people on dial up I'd say ;)

I don't know how much building and/or scripting you will be able to do on dial up. You need broadband to enjoy Second Life. About all you can really do is enjoy as a super chat room.

The Linden staff doesn't normally give classes either. There are a lot of SL residents that have classes of various types. Look in Events.

Get yourself broadband Zack and enjoy SL to the fullest extent. Also I am dropping a landmark on your profile for the Cordova Sandbox.

The prices, they want 80.95 a month here. If you say DSL, they want 75.50.

two way satellite might be an option. There is some lag, but thats not an issue with SL.

Question, why does LL need to host the event for it to work with your dialup?

Don't be hasty, now. What is your average bandwidth (top right)? If you can get 30kbps, you'll still be able to play. TP as much as you possibly can, and take it slow whenever you have to fly around. If you let things load, you're usually OK. Anything lower than 30kbps makes it almost impossible to move around (for me at least).

I was in the same boat you're in now for a long time. I didn't think I could play any games online. Finally I bit the bullet and upgraded to satellite. I'm currently using Direcway 2-way satellite - the ping is monstrous, but that's not a huge issue in SL. The only problem I have is the occasional bandwidth spike and some difficulties moving around. If you log in later on when there aren't as many people playing, it's usually not too bad. I'd look into satellite if I were you. It's no equivalent to cable or DSL, but when it comes to most things, it beats dial-up by a golden apple.

Hmm, I don't know. I'd have to look up the prices, but I heard people had trouble with satelliete on There and I don't want to lose acess. But i'll look into it because I do like Second Life and don't want to have to stop playing.

Just wondering why it cost so much to get broadband. Usually its either you can get it, or you can't. Since you can get DSL, you must be within so many feet of the CO. So I don't see what the deal is. Who are you getting your prices from?

Apparently, Joe, this kind of pricing crap happens often. It depends on where you are, really. And it's not an on/off switch: it can be available to an area, but pricey to get it there.

LL doesn't have time to teach, and from what I've seen them suggest, their coding standards aren't exactly high. (Pardon me if this has changed: they WERE, after all, old notecards that I was reading.)

Anyway... I'd be happy to teach some scripting. I still haven't the hang of explaining some of the basic concepts though (I usually start off with "You'll be better off with a little bit of previous coding/scripting knowledge" because of this.), which is why I haven't made any events to teach scripting.
Once I do, though, off I go with regular teaching events! :D
