One of the things that I think Second Life suffers from is that its really very hard to get stuff known about to the majority of the population that dont read the new products forum. I'd like to see a sort of 'new products' show and tell. Yes, I know it'd be commercial/marketing orientated and not just a 'look what I made' dealie, but still, with 50o-some sims to explore and Find Lists that make your eyes bleed, I think that this would get a good response if done right.

The products could be laid out for sale at the event, kinda like an impromptu flea market, maybe with the incentive that they are marked down in price for the duration or something.

you are welcome :)

I'd attend, too!

They could be themed on different days, so maybe one is a fashion/modelling event, while the next would be vehicle themed etc

Just so you're all aware...
Assuming that todays fix works, I'll be restarting building contests next week, and quite possibly building classes too.
Watch the events list for details.

The thing is, it's not so much that the only events are *best naked this* and *best thong that*, it's just that there are so many club events that anything else is drowned... Yes, you can turn off M events, but it's not the point... Maybe there should be a colour coding thing, you know... Green for Welcome area newbie Events, Red for *Adult* events (or blue maybe), and so on...

What I like in current events
01-06-2005 07:50
Hi Kiki :).

THANKS FOR ASKING

Fairly classical themed events - be it schoolgirl, naughty nurse, formal, whatever... are successful because they're generic easy fun that require little attention, and where you can just meet old and new friends to chat away the night, so I'm not dissing them (I DO agree that a list of 12 of those at the same time is fairly depressing though).

Accordingly, suggestions below are variations on "standard" club events... A club is a club is a club, and there should be no shame in that.

But you want more to make the event funnier and competitive with those of other Sims :).

Here's my list of what I like most when going "SL clubbing".
  1. Good interactive, talkative, DJs that bring fun to the event. I just love Alex MacKenzie and what she does at Lestat.
  2. Nice surroundings. Well designed clubs with open spaces are what I love best. Belle Feu is my favorite. No need for immense sprawling clubs... SL today breaks down anywhere between 25 and 40 AVIs anyway, you might as well live with it. No need to get room for 200.
  3. No crass events. It's better when you feel the people attending will put a bit of effort in it. "Formal", "Best Orange", "Best nurse and patient (or nurse and doctor)", "Best Schoolgirl in plaid" is definitely more fun to attend than "best thong" or "best naked avi", FGS. Why is it better? It makes me curious, so I come in to see what and who's there :). Your club, Playpen, is one of my favourites just for that (and because you're the owner too, of course :) ).
  4. Dancer Lineups :). Maybe it's just me, but I love the Teazer's line up of similarly clothed synced dancers welcoming newcomers.
  5. Prizes for men too :) . When there is only one price - heck, you know it's going to go to a sexy girl 99% of the time.

Best,

Me Again

Taking advantage of another thread asking about events. As mentioned before, we are starting up a Survivor Second Life with various competitive events at some smaller dwell locations. We have purposely not focused in on the big clubs because we were wanting to show off the other variety of events that are offered in SL and often overlooked. Of course new players want money, and the clubs are the common and easy way to earn it. However, if we as a community continue to highlight the "variety with a challenge" events, the new players will see all the other options of making money and having fun at those other places too.

I have to say it

I have learned alot in forums on many things... But when it comes to Events I have learned it is best not to ask opinions. If you are wanting to bring people to a CLub for instance, regardless what anyone says here, the events that draw people for the most part are still the most generic :

Best Wings
Sexiest Av
Best Dressed
etc

Snapshot Contests do well if there are not too many of the above listed at same time

I have done some and others combined have tried many other things that have been mentioned by the "We are so sick of contests " forum people that they wish to see more of this or more of that and people reply to those post they would attend but it simply is not evidently true.

If you have an idea that would be fun for you - do it! HAve a fun time.

I am not bashing any post in this thread.

I am sharing an Observation. I have not seen anything overly bashing on this thread so i am not referring to anyone here so please dont attack me as if i had attacked you.

An event description that is not in ALL CAPS, spells words out completely and is gramatically correct as well as inticing and unique... oh forget it...

My wish list

I spend a lot of time clubbing and I am a professional event producer in real life, so here are my thoughts:

1) Announce your music style in the events list. Nothing annoys me more than teleporting, flying, finding a club..only to discover that it's playing a music genre that I hate. Clubs are in the business of providing atmosphere; make it easier for the people looking for your atmosphere to find you.

2) No more events with "sexiest" anything. We are all slim and gorgeous here in SL, we all have big tits and great asses. Find something more original.

3) I disagree with Stephane below on Teazers. The thing I hate the most is clubs with naked/nearly naked chicks/dudes on a stage or elevated above the crowd. Mixed in with the crowd, it is a different atmosphere entirely. Club dancers and owners should be out meeting people and mixing it up. Too many clubs feel like you've entered a private party with a constant flow of "in jokes" and you are an outsider.

4) Welcome new people. The thing that I loved most about the dearly departed Punany Club was the friendliness of the people. Anyone new arriving was greeted, told where the dance machine was and made to feel at home. Noobs were handed clothing, sparklers, etc... It all comes down to the atmosphere you provide people.

5) Make it easy for people to fly in and out. If I can't find your entrance, I'm likely to head someplace else. Doors are quaint, but SL is a fly community. Arrange your landing deck to correspond with the direction people will be coming from the nearest telehub.

How about actually having the event that you post? I rarely get to club events, but the last two times I did, there was nothing resembling the event that was posted. I had to double-check the events listing to make sure I was at the right place.

Last night at XXX was supposed to be some punk/ska themed event, and when I got there a few dancers were on poles and a few people milled about, and some top-40 crap was playing. I waited a few minutes and walked out, probably never to return.

Club owners, come down hard on event hosts if they don't follow through or start on time. It's your reputation on the line. I understand there can be problems (login, RL, whatever), but you should at least have a contingency, or announcement that the event was cancelled.

Sorry for the rant, back on topic...

I agree with all of Isablan's points, and I'd like to add one. Carefully craft your event listing. Check your spelling and grammar, and make it seem like you put time into it. Don't shout in all caps, and don't spell "people" as "ppl." It will give the impression you put time into your event as well.

I don't think there are alot of "new" ideas out there, but there are 3 things in an event that make it MUCH more enjoyable for me. I think they've all been mentioned already in this post, but I'm going to reiterate them anyway.

1. Friendliness - There is nothing worse than going into a club, saying hello and getting nothing but silence in return. I usually leave within a minute if the host and helpers don't care enough to say hello and welcome their guests. Someone mentioned clubs where all you hear are "inside jokes". I can understand that, but there's no better way to alienate new customers.

2. DJ - Being a slave to the music stream is horrible. Live music adds alot to an event. A DJ can be interactive, take requests, play the music that the masses enjoy and contribute to the overall theme. There are soooooo many DJ's out in SL, there is absolutely no excuse NOT to have one at your event.

3. Creativity - Even the old boring standbys can be spiced up immensely with a little forethought. I went to a pajama event, the club had a giant bed that was scripted to bounce and gave out scripted pillows (feathers flew out when you hit someone) to have a pillow fight. That was one of the most fun events I've been to in SL. Yes, it does take more work, but people will definitely remember your club and be much more likely to return. Even putting up some themed decorations would be great.

random ideas:

scavenger hunt
double dare
drag race
in-drag contest
murder mystery
weakest link, groups of players join up as teams. Slowly remove player from each team, think of road rules. Every one on the winning team wins, even if they were removed.
madlibs
art shows
plays
always new, change things there no reason a club has to be the same all the time.
sim sized events, rent a sim
who's line is it any way
paint ball
assassin, every one receives a weapon and and an assignment. Assignment consist of a group. Group could be color or icons, extra. To find out some one group, two people have to show each other their group card. Last one standing wins.
Tupperware ware parties. For beds, clothing, cars extra
give thing other then money, clothes, items extra
life size bored games

I love all those ideas! I also enjoy Kris's flea market idea, though as I understand it, the Lindens don't allow commercial events? I could be wrong.

Also Kiki: you want more people to show up? Never, ever EVER spell "Please" as "PLzzzz" AGAIN. And "You" is not "U." kthxbye :)
