Pardon my ignorance, but could someone kindly explain (or link me) to the latest info on Linden support for events? I heard somewhere that support is a thing of the past and that we're on our own. True?

If you have an educational activity you can still get support. The story is up in the Linden announcements section.

The Skinny on Linden Support
05-02-2005 10:33
Once Lindens supported events with $250/host pay and $500 prize pay for contests, so, in order to get money events hosts had to construe whatever they were doing to be contests. Then that didn't work so well (of course, because we're all trying to think of a million contests instead of doing what we might do best and making a smashing event while paying the host). So, to get rid of the million contests (the only things they would subsidize) and supposedly as measures to strengthen the Linden (though only a very small part of the SL population hosts events) and finally (though never stated) likely to get rid of some administrative responsibility for a Linden or two, Events funding went away. (This whole part you may already know, but just in case)

NOW: the thing is that events funding cuts stirred a lot of discontentment up because it meant that events venues must now operate at a loss or have sponsorships or charge people a huge amount of money to break even ($25/event at my calculations). Dwell isn't enough to pay for events to break even much less make money. Some folks like myself have started threads started about it but folks other than events hosts were speaking up too indicating a general sense of dissatisfaction (we are hearing from folks who don't like a calendar all comprised of (very fine) bingo tringo and slingo events). I then posted in the hotline to lindens section asking if this decision would be reviewed if people were clearly not satisfied with the direction events were taking since the cuts. Robin said that it could be reviewed, but that they needed to compare the data of events before the cut and events after to see if there was indeed a problem. THEN came the features vote (which I encourage everyone to do) and the post to reinstate events funding. This item was so popular that it had more than 620 votes when I last looked. might be more by now. SO, Jeska Linden posted a thread allowing us to discuss this feature suggestion and that is where we are. It is possible to teach a class for $500 compensation (land use fee). It is a significant amount of work to teach a class (for me about as much work as hosting an event since my events tend to be a bit labour intensive). In other words, yes events funding was yanked and yes, lots of people want it reinstated, and some of us hope that the Lindens will be responsive to a genuine flaw in the system: that events venues cannot otherwise make enough money to support their events without begging for dough from people at the door or begging for dough from rich folks. My knees are sore from all the begging, so I gave up and just started paying out of pocket. My last event cost me approximately $3,200. I made $200 from dwell. See the problem?

Ever since I came back with my new character I've noticed something depressing about the events.

A lot of the 'community' based events have practically disappeared! By this I mean the events that really do nothing but bring people together under the pretext of some sort of contest.

Yes, I know there are a few scattered one remaining, here and there, but in the olden days of yore, the event calander was filled with;

Show and Tells - made something cool, show it off and win a prize
game show events - Pituca still has Jeopardy, and there's a few half-hearted trivia's, but that's it.
Structured best of "fill-in-the-blank" . Now it's just a dance floor and every once in awhile people are asked to vote of whatever.
Newbie question hours. There always used to be Mentor shows for newbs about one thing or another.
Mentor shows. Aside from the newb shows, Mentor events were everywhere, about everything.

The list goes on. Now it seems like 90% of everything is a club dance with something tacked on as an afterthought. Nothing but a dwell device. Now there's nothing intrinsically wrong with that, they can be fun too, but we lost something that's a little hard to put my finger on.

Wait, maybe I can pinpoint it. Now, events are mostly just for dwell. They used to be just for fun. Sure, you get paid for doing it, but the prize money was also given to you which meant you could have an event just for pure fun without worrying about dwell.

I'd like to see that again.

Sorry for the Shameless Plug - but some of the stuff you mentioned lacking we have going on at a regular basis at the Shelter :)

Every Sunday/Tuesday/Thursday at 7pm is our Game Show - Payment Podium (Similar to Who Wants To Be A Millionaire) This is our only 'Lag-Fest' event - due to popularity. Since everyone is typically seated - any lag experienced seems to become less an issue.

Every day at 4pm we have a Newbie Welcome Party (Not always calendar posted)

Every day at 5pm we have a Freebie Exchange Gathering
(Not always calendar posted)

If you get a chance, stop by and say hello! Mostly, our mission is helping newbies - and I've received comments before that we seem to be much less a 'club' and more a 'lounge' :)

No - you actually hit the nail on the head RIGHT there. Maybe 'sexiest in red' did nothing other than bring people together but................it DID bring people together and thats EXACTLY what we are missing now.
