Hi there, Uber newbie here...

Just trying to get my head around the concepts of the game, and how people are making money and running clubs and other such things. One of the things I came accross is

"Camping Chairs" these are chairs that pay out a certain ammount of L$ per hour to encourage people to camp in them for ever. Ok obviously this has to do with the fact that the more people in an area, the more dwell someone gets and the better ranking they get on the events page. Ok cool help starving newbies out get some promotion and advertising.

Cool but how does it all work out, the place I found had about 20 seats, and they where going fairly hot and heavy, it seemed that it was about 10$ per hour per seat so where looking at 2,000L$ per hour so in my rough figure assuming 100% usuage 4800L per day.

Is dwell THAT high??? Do these people make cash doing this, does it really attract non campers to the location? Am i missing something major in my thoughts?

Dwell isn't that high, no. But the money spent there is a sort of "advertising budget", aimed towards getting a higher score on the find directory. The idea is, being up high will encourage people to visit there first, and thus buy things.

Here's what you need to know:

There are two gods in Second Life: Dwellnor and Laggnor. Worshiping either one will piss off the other, so choose who you pay homage to carefully.

Worshiping Dwellnor will cause Laggnor to smite you with slow performance. Rumor has it that Laggnor will go into exile in 1.7, but this is unconfirmed.

Worshiping Laggnor will give you a smooth SL experience, however Dwellnor will forsake you, and curse your Tringo events. :D

Seriously, if you want more information on Dwell (Traffic) - consult the thread here: What is Dwell?

Can anyone tell me if Traffic totally resets to "0" everyday? For a few days my traffic seemed to be stuck at 58. Yesterday it jumped to 404. This morning it is at 38. Is this normal? I never really paid much attention to it but now that the search feature is screwed up and my sales have dropped through the floor I have started to try to keep track of it.

Yes. Traffic is reset on a daily basis, and is only cumulative for that time. To show a constant value, it must be sustained. Don't ever try too hard tho, that's not fun and burns people out in here.

DWELLNOR AND LAGGNOR PRAISE BE! (great one Travis)

I wonder who would win in a no-holds-barred battle - the flying spagetti monster, Dwellnor, or Laggnor?

I think it would be like those superhero crossover comics where they fight and cause all kinds of mayhem for a bit, then realize it's silly to be fighting and team up against Godzilla or something.

FSM 4TW!!!

Classic though on Dwell vs. Lag....

Higher Dwell means more peeps in area which (of course) = higher lag. Oh well, as long as I get paid my L$1 per 5min

LMAO, yes! "Why have we been wasting all this time fighting against our selves when the TRUE enemy is Canada? I think we've learned a very important lesson today, and that lesson is about the POWER of FRIENDSHIP!"

Incidentally, I was digging around for something completely unrelated this morning, and came across this little nugget. Thought I'd share:

Transcript of Town Hall with Cory Liden re: SL Technology

From: Cory Linden

Cory Linden: L. How the !!(*#@ does dwell work?
Cory Linden: <another deep breath>
Cory Linden: OK, here we go: Every user gets 1 point of dwell to give out during the 24 hours between midnight and midnight. Any parcel of land that the user spends more than 5 sequential minutes on gets counted as a place that they spent time.
Cory Linden: Parcels owned by the resident (or group) are counted as if they were the same parcel. The user's 1 point is then evenly divided between those parcels
Cory Linden: So, if was online for 1 hour and spent 20 minutes on resident A's parcel and 40 minutes on resident B's parcel, resident A would get 0.333 from me and resident B would get 0.666 from me.
Cory Linden: Alternately, if I only spent 5 minutes online and spent all of it on resident A's land, she would receive 1 point from me. Those raw point totals are what is reported in the find window.
Cory Linden: To get from those to L$, we normalize the total against the total amount of L$ we are giving away that day and give out the money proportionately.
Cory Linden: If the owner is an individual, they just get the L$. If it is a group, then the L$ are split between the group members.
Cory Linden: There, clear as mud, right?
