Video Clip Contest Anyone? 10K First Prize?

Just wanted to see how much Interest there would be in a Video Clip Contest with high prize money, i.e. first place would get something like 10K?

Please let me know what you think :D I want to start planning this sooooon!! :D

Here is a draft of what the rules would be and the timeline:

THIS IS JUST A DRAFT AND NOT THE FINAL RULES
Final rules will be posted in the other events forum :)

Welcome to the U:SL Video Clip Contest.

Prizes: L$30k in cold hard cash :)

This contest has been designed to highlight the U:SL Game.

*There will be one categories
Video Clip - This clip should be taken at U:SL, any clips not taken at U:SL will be disqualified.

*Video Clips for this contest should highlight U:SL in their composition.
*By submitting a Clip, you are granting us exclusive rights to use your clip for our promotional material.
*Each avatar will have the opportunity to submit a maximum of ONE (1) Video Clip each.
*Videos will be viewed in world during an event, and available on the web: website to be determined.
*Voting will take place online, website to be announced.

**Prizes
1st place: L$15,000
2nd place: L$9,000
3rd place: L$6,000

TO ENTER the Video Clip Contest:
*Email your Clip to ____________ with your Avatars name and "U:SL Video Clip Contest" in the subject line (This is important because you clip may get thrown away if it looks like junk mail!!!)

*Please get your videos to me by:
*March 1st, 2005 at 5pm SL time*
Videos not recieved by this date will be disqualified.

Voting will offically start: March 3rd, 2005
Voting will offically end: March 11, 2005 at 5pm

Wow, hmmm... Ariel, good idea. In line with what Hamlet was posting about recently, this might engage some interest -- and open new avenues -- for Machinima in SL. I certainly hope so, although the built-in video recording tools are fundamentally basic. Could be fun! (I hope so.)

hehe actually Torley the idea came from Foxy who was doing something along those lines with Hamlet (I think, Foxy feel free to correct me lol) :D I just wanted to see if there was interest and get some input :D hehe

:O You mean we might actually be let in? lol sorry Foxy graciously allowed myself and a few other umber folk to see chinatown not long ago which I appreciate. This sounds like a really cool contest Ariel and I'd imagine you'd get some great entries. I suck at taking video though so I'll stick to the pic contests haha. Can't wait to see results from this :D.

Great Idea! Sounds like fun!
Maybe someone could post instructions on how to make video clips. I for one have tried, never got the thing to work. Shrank down the window and all. Never could get it to record anything. Trying to find any "How to's" on it.

Just to let you all know, we will be going ahead with this contest and posting the "official" rules in the Special Events section here in the next day or two, soooooo if this interests you, start thinking up ideas, playing with the video capture feature in SL and get ready to call Camera, Lights, Action!

U:SL will be opening soon!! Feb 11th I believe, sooo get started playing around with that video camera! :D

I dont know if its my computer configurations, but I can never capture a movie. Am I doing something wrong?

I do a file start/stop movie to disk. And I save it to the location I want. Then press file start/stop movie again. But when I went to the folder, its not there. I can do a snapshot to disk no problem at all.

Am I doing something wrong?

Hi Rinaz. I was experimenting with this feature yesterday. When you choose start/stop, it asks you what video codec you want to use. There are some codecs that, if you choose them, when you go into the appropriate folder afterwards you will find the file there but it is 0kb. I assume that this is because you don't actually have that codec on your computer. So, you might want to try experiment with saving the movie using different codecs.

The only other thing I could thing of is that perhaps the video has been recorded in a different location to the one you think it's in. So you might want to do a search for all recently modified files on C:\ (or wherever) that are *.avi, *.mpg, etc.

Alternatively, you might want to get fraps (www.fraps.com). It's not free but it offers some advantages over the in-game video recording features.

Can you post technical details for the clips? i.e. what codecs should we encode in, is there a limit to the length of the clip and/or file size, is editing in outside programs allowed, etc.

Thank you for your reply, I tried using the method that you told me in regards to the video codec, but I have had problems with that since the only option that I see is the .avi format. There isnt any other format like the mpg format. Which is strange, as I was able to do so previously. Could it be because of the graphic card? I am currently using Nvidia geforce4 MX 4000

I have tried the fraps, and I must say that I am impressed. It worked very well for me. Output video looks pretty crisp and picks up the sound wonderfully. I like it.

Thanks for the suggestion :) I'm not sure if the codec problem that I am having might be fixed though :)

Hi Rinaz. I had another look. I choose "Start/save to disk" and then get the "Save As" window same as you. But then I put in a filename and click on OK and a "Video Compression" window pops up, that lists the different codecs to choose from (I've attached a picture). Do you get that option?

From a couple of the codecs I tested, the in-game recording lagged the SL client worse than Fraps did. So I'll probably use Fraps.

No, I dont even get that option which is shown in your attachment neal. I used to be able to, but I find that I dont anymore.

I've already read the links that foxy gave and it was pretty good :) But anyways, fraps seem to work well. So I reckon I'd rather use that instead.

I would like to enter the contest. Plz excuse me just returned back to SL after a 2yr absense. What/Where is U:SL? Also, what type of video clip do you prefer or is this open-ended.
