Hello all! Please leave your feedback about the BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend event that happened in SL over the last weekend,

I for one enjoyed it and would like to thank all those who went to the trouble to set it up and to all those who attended! :)

It was fantastic thanks to the peeps who built the place and the BBC, also thanks to some great after event DJing from Slim Warrior and some great music, this was what SL was made for! :)

Woohooo! Great show, this is what it's all about - Slim's still rockin the afterparty even if most of the Avalon crew have passed out =)

Added the following after a good nights sleep...

The Big Weekend show was a great triumph, despite a few minor technical glitches with the video streaming - I was getting full video and was amazed that it was only a few seconds behind what was being shown live on the TV.

The stage and festial areas where very well designed and reflected the atmosphere of the real event. However if it had been built at the corners of the 4 sims ( where the big Teddy was ) it may have handled more ppl - like the Aimee Weber Amphitheatre in Kula. I suspect there was a good reason for not doing this though.

I have a sneaking suspicion that us Brits are going to take over second life after all the great publicity around the Big Weekend and other stuff thats been going on...

Keep up the good work!

:)

was a great event -
although id say about half of the people couldnt get the video to work but this was prob down to their internet settings. still would of been useful to of done more testing though.

did turn into a shambles at times ie going from mature to pg to no objects to back to objects to 10 helicopters spawned in the middle etc.

was good event dont get me wrong.

just hope the beeb didnt get ripped off.

i said all this on flickr only to get slagged off in email from someone.

MY feelings around this:

No videostream - and no my settings was perfect - it was not showed up as we where to many.. at that sim.. I looked at other places and my setting worked fine.,,

I missed the stream and it was a minus.

I like multi media evenemang as this...sound - radio - streaming video - lots of people... and in SL.. gave me a kick.

The feeling of the sim(s) with tent and lots of land gave me a nice feeling at it is IRL to..

The smal houses (offices?) was delicate furnitured.. by a mix between English and SF made furniture.. (?).

****

The overal feeling was great.

The info about what and when - was terrible bad.

Finding out about it and participating

When i saw that this event was taking place, through reading a blog, I decided that I had to come down and see. I listened to the stream from the bbc website rather than second life. Once I got the sound and music working it was good.

I would not have listened to the show if not for the interactive second life experience.

It makes radio listening interactive and that's really interesting. You're surrounded by people who are having the same experience but from around the world.

You don't get the food and the drinks but you do feel less isolated then simple radio listening.

I look forward to many more similar events of this sort.

I think as people have said, it needed a lot more publicity before hand, also some people there to encourage people to take a shifty around, I only saw a few people actually move over to the other Islands to look at the rest of the place.

I went from Island to Island but at the time no one was around so I went back to the main tent.

Good work :)

I haven't been at many events so I can't really compare, but I loved this weekend. More constructive comments follow :)

The screen: There was no video the first day for most of us, only the big blue Q. The second day there was video... very nice to see such a big screen in SL, it really gave the feeling of being in a concert.

Very nice details: all the "stands" offering from t-shirts to animations. They gave people some way to "interact" with the event, not just use their inventory.

The other islands were an interesting view. It would have been better if there was something that attracted groups (maybe a restaurant-like area with places to sit?) I found the central bbc bear a little big ugly, but hey, you can't please everybody :D

I think that secondary attractions in the surrounding sims would have been mandatory if the event had received more publicity - oh, by the way: I heard about it on the Metaverse Messenger :)

And the lag: it was less than what I expected. Around 8fps for me, not bad for 60 dancing avatars :D

Well, first, I was pleasantly surprised by how well my computer behaved, given that I'm on an Mac Intel Mini that crashes in SL every two hours, even in the best of circumstances. I'm not sure what you technically did to be ready to handle all the people, but it worked great for me; please tell others, so they can do it too! I also liked the minimalist style of building that went into the event - the big giant low-prim stage, a few promotional tables, and otherwise just a lot of blank space for av interaction and rendering. It definitely made it feel like a big party, and also gave me lots of wiggle room for walking around.

Now, that all said, I unfortunately didn't actually have much *fun* at it; with all those people there, all of them into doing their own thing, the whole event turned into not much more for me than a glorified form of watching it on television. It was definitely cool to experience, and definitely something I could see myself attending, say, once a year; what I'd love to see, though, is the BBC take one of those islands and turn into a series of smaller venues. Say, a whole street of different pubs, each dedicated to a different style of music or different specific program? That way your listeners could listen like normal, while still having a chance to interact with others who like that specific type of music or show. I'd love a chance to come to your land on a regular basis to do this, and to then save the big overwhelming festivals for once a year or so, just like RL.

Anyway, my two cents; and congratulations on what I thought was a very successful event.

Thanks for the input, we're working with the BBC on a series of events. The island will be a permanent fixture, we're busily developing content.

As for promoting these events, this is one of the problems with Second Life and its inability to advertise events on a large scale; you shouldn't have to search and dig for these things. We've started to use the Metaverse Messenger, we'll adopt any new publications as they come available. If you have a publication please contact us.

We actually promoted the event in the forums, proving yet again that they are limited to soap boxes and rants.

One Big Weekend was designed as a pilot launch for the islands. We've been amazed at the word-of-mouth power this event generated. Not just in Second Life, but in the 40+ blogs, review sites and industry news/media sites. At one stage, the four sims had around 180+ people. Imagine if we had promoted and advertised!

We'll be running a lot more branded content events in the coming months. Plus, we're also planning on launching two/three major projects of this size and scope in the near future. One of these projects includes 200+ sims!

Thanks for attending, we totally appreciate your support.

Very good event Fizik :) - Enjoyed it immensly and was great to see people get into the spirit too of it. Even if I did spend most of my time at the event buried in IM's - but did show just how much people enjoyed the event, everyone I interviewed loved it.

Very well run and successfull :).

More mud, dodgy hotdog stands, dreadful weather, and dogs on string. Then it's just like being at a real festival.
