Hi everyone,
I am a third year psychology student of Winchester University in the UK. I am currently conducting a study on the type of support for mental illness that Second Life has to offer, and how people are making use of it. I would like to open this discussion to anyone that may have any thoughts, opinions or anecdotes they would like to share surrounding this issue. This could include anything you wish, even general attitudes towards support surrounding mental health (i.e. depression, eating disorders, anxiety disorders etc).
This forum is set up purely to gain information about how mental health issues are approached in Second Life; it is not a support group. I am not qualified to offer any advice or support, so it is vital you understand that this is for discussion purposes only. I appreciate that this post is on public domain, so you may not be willing to disclose certain information. This also means that sensitivity to other’s comments is necessary. I will leave this post up for 8 weeks in order to give sufficient time to make a statement, or as many as you wish.
By replying to this post you would be consenting for your data to be used in my broader study of Second Life support which will hopefully give some insight into the benefits it has to offer and how it could be improved, therefore your comments would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time, I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Given the sensitive nature of some the responses you could potentially receive, I'm surprised that you've turned off private messages.

you may already be aware of these resources already but kate amdahl wrote a really excellent article and does an interview with a rl counsellor who offers peer support in sl and helps guide residents to rl professional resources should they be required. And just to be clear, although she is a rl licensed counsellor, she does not offer professional counselling in world and only does peer support. http://kateamdahl.livejournal.com/46684.htmlhttp://slwellness.com/

I like the idea of support groups in SL. Support I have gotten in SL has helped me. I wish there were more and larger groups. The largest group for support in SL "Support for Healing", i was a member of since its first week of creation, but it has changed so much over the years alienating a lot of us that now it's sort of a magnet of support that does actually give support any longer.
I think groups and individuals who have backgrounds in the mental health field can and have made a difference and I would like to see more help groups with active help, especially in the area of bipolar (and its many shades) & schizophrenia.

support for healing, groups, etc

Hello, I am a host at SFH island and do several groups in world as well as offer indiv sessions. As a masters level counselor in rl, I am finding that sl offers a comfortable avenue for people who may have never sought out mental healthcare in rl for a multitude of reasons. Help inworld or online can be beneficial as long as the counselor is cautious during the implementation of service and follows ethical guidelines and processes as a counselor would in rl. When it comes to mental health and sl, sl is no longer a game but a progressive tool of communication. Support groups are just one way that sl is helping people. I would be happy to expand if anyone is interested.

I really appreciate your comments Biana, and was wondering how you felt these support groups had changed, and what particularly has made you feel alienated from them?

I really appreciate your comments Biana, and was wondering how you felt these support groups had changed, and what particularly has made you feel alienated from them? Well they have changed by growing too large and in an attempt to control the size, they created a chain of command, so to say, that governs the group chat, and often reorganizes the way the group did things when it had a smaller user base. Support for Healing, before i left around July/August 2008, had made it impossible to ask for help in the main chat by having all these "security" people bark at you how the group chat was no longer for public use or support and rudely directed you to some other group chat, and after one gets that barked at by them you usually do not feel like going to some other group chat to voice that you need help since you have just been knocked down/rejected already. Support groups need to stay supportive, not splinter into sub-groups, where one cannot be heard because the majority of the users are in the main group. In fact, many of the people doing support probably should not be doing so because I have run into a couple who have a very poor attitude in dealing with people who are in a state of distress (which does not mean hysterical, but definitely means seeking help/on the verge of tears, etc... ). I've literally seen verbal fights break out in the Support For Healing chat when people asked for help and were told to join another group and to stop chatting the main SFH group - pretty thoughtless and definitely hurtful to those seeking help. Not only do support groups need the numbers/people (since we all help each other when possible), it also needs stability and an obvious means by which to seek out/pursue help when you are in SL - since that is all many of us have at the moment, and the means of seeking out support needs to grow with the group from initial conception, not be reorganized and re-structured in a way that alienates the members of the group who were there before the organization completely revamped itself. What would be great if there was a Suicide Hot-Line center in Second Life. That would be supreme actually. Specifically one that follows the rules, like not asking for data that could lead authorities to you. Last time i called a the National Suicide Prevention center they asked for soooooo much information that i hung up...leaving me in worse shape than when i called. Luckily for me there are some people in SL that can and do actually help. Some times people just need someone to talk to, and any support group in SL needs to offer this without obstacles beyond needing to have someone online to actually speak with. Counseling is not what is being asked for, but an ear, encouragement, caring, and kindness...with those elements we can often emerge from distress, safely, and somewhat more sane.

The comments on this forum have been extremely helpful in demonstrating some of the views people have on the support groups that run in SL. I am really grateful to those who have shared their opinions, and invite anybody else who has any comments (no matter how minor you may feel they are), or any suggestions for future services. As I wrote at the start of this forum, I will only be using information gathered over a period of 8 weeks, which ends on Wednesday (8th March). Thanks again for your time.
