Hello Everyone! I have this idea that i cannot get out of my poor little brain, and I was wondering if you guys think there would be support for it. I'd really like to build an event space based (somewhat loosely) on the 19th Century Paris Opera House. It would include a foyer with staircase, a main stage area, maybe side shops or galleries, and i'd love love love to have catacombs underneath. Events it could be used for: -performing arts (our very own sl operas, ballets, musicals etc) -theatre groups for improv etc -fashion shows -showcases for historically inspired / theatrically inspired sl clothing and avs -a sl masquerade ball -more stuff i can't think of right now... I've started a group in world called Dell'Aria Opera House -- if you're interested in the project, please join and bug me in world whenever you would like. If the response is good, I'll start a thread on the group forums so that we can discuss all the logistics that would go into a project of this scale. I have good building skills and even better photoshop skills (if i may toot my own horn...*toot*), but I would love to see this project as a group effort, because i think it would really enrich the final product - maybe even developing into a neato community of people interested in theatre, historally inspired builds, historical costume, etc etc. which is something i really haven't seen in SL yet. Thanks for reading! -Operetta

OMG, I'm so going to IM you in game. I was just going to come here and ask for help in finding a location to do events that I have idea's for but no location. The main location I have the need for is a stage.... a real one... with a dressing room and stuff. I wanted to try to do a BS Drama kind of talk show, but I also want try and do a play, and another Ms. Second Life event.... all my idea's require a stage... of some kind. I suck at building and I own nothing but a brain full of ideas... so maybe I'll be of no use to you until you actually get the stage. But if you want an idea person to help you use the stage you are building... I'm you're Gal-Friday. TTYIG...

Superb idea Operetta! (Loving the name btw) I'll be joining your group as soon as I next log in. I'd *love* to bring opera to Second Life. Imagine the sets you could create, I'd love to stage the operas we never see in RL, like the ones that require an avalanche in Act III! There are some other people who have trod this ground and who would be worth getting in touch with. I don't know if you saw the Palermo Opera House build before it was taken down but there are pictures here: /53/67/82674/1.htmlThe stunning build is by Bill Stirling (and I still need to contact him to get the lowdown on the project and what happened to it.) You might also be interested in Horizon Theatre set up by Taltos Zadoq in response to a 'Murder Mystery Party' idea. I don't know if anything has come of this inworld but the discusson is here: /110/98/74314/1.htmlOh, and one final thing. For funding you/we could try the Foundation for Rich Content. They give grants of L$2000 for events. The application process is pretty straightforward and the definition of 'rich content' is meant to be fairly wide. More info available here: /110/ab/58103/1.htmlHope that helps!

Fabulous! Thanks for your responses. FYI- I finally changed the group to open enrollment, so anyone who wants to join up just needs to hit the button. So it looks like there are lots of groups who are interested in using the space. Now the question becomes the logistics of creating said space. My partner (Phantom Nephilim) and I have been researching land options for the build. It looks like in the long term buying a large plot dramatically outweighs renting space. To make the catacombs really cool (and able to be traversed by boat...think "Phantom of the Opera"...yeah) , we were thinking it would be best to get a plot that was mostly water with a bit of coast --building the main building above the water, using the water for the catacombs, and then having some land in front for tasteful landscaping. I talked to finn Jensen of AnsheChung, and he said it would probably be possible to get part of Anshe's new in progress sims specially designed for our build, but i know that this is not going to come cheap. Here are the limiting factors/Questions we face at this point: 1. How much land do we need to successfully develop the build? -- needing to take into accout tier payments and group bonus. 2. Money for the purchase of the land plot. -- fund raising? 3. Tier payments. 4. Finding builders/scripters etc willing to help on the build / how long this thing will take to make! Any thoughts/suggestions highly appreciated as always. -Operetta PS. I'm starting work on a floorplan draft for the build and will put it up when finished for discussion.
