Hello, I'm fairly new to SL and I am trying to get into the music scene, but I've been looking around and haven't been able to find any places that cater to what I would call "experimental" music. Most places seem to be geared towards rock, pop, and electronica (which is understandabe as those are the most popular in rl).

I'm mostly interested in free jazz, general improv, ambient, noise, drone, and other such things. I'm also a musician (in that sort of general style) and I'm considering playing live in SL. Anybody know of any places that are geared to any of this sort of music?

YES!!!!!!

true... a good majority of clubs, live musicians, and DJs are mainstream (to use a blanket term)... but that's why its called 'mainstream'

I'm not sure I can point you to an exact direction right now on the forums, but contact me in world, and we'll friend up... I venture into a lot of cool avant garde music happenings that are not always promoted and not always very popular. I'll shoot you info as things come up.

Me personally, I produce digital electronica and fusion.. I'm a sound and sample manipulator. It may not be exactly what you're looking for, but it sure is experimental.
Also, I DJ in SL a lot too... all of my music is very eclectic: NuJazz, Deep House, Electronica, IDM, triphop, funk

Let's hang out and find us some weird tunes!!

Sounds good, I'll hit you up in SL sometime.

See I jam just for practice/my amusement a lot in my home studio (I'm an audio engineer as well), and if I thought people would be interested in listening to it then I'd be up for playing live in SL.

I'm also just interested in meeting people with simular musical tastes. I like almost anything avant-garde (although I don't care much for that term), anything from contemperary composers (Cage, Riech, Glass, etc), to free improv stuff (John Zorn, Supersilent), to noise (Merzbow, Massona, etc), to electonic (Bass Communion, Skinny Puppy)...and much more.

The RoC in Music City has an open door policy for SL musicians of all kinds, the stream is yours to use if you want to play between scheduled events, nite or day.

Contact Mel Cheeky or Xea Maradona in world for more info.
