I don't know the first thing about setting up a streaming audio thingie in SL. I don't want it to be just radio, I want to be able to play my own collection of mp3s too.

Any suggestions on what program and what URL i should put the streaming audio in? For free, of course.

I don't know what questions to ask, I have totally no idea how to do this.

Anyone patient enough to help?

Hi Stella

I think you'll be hard=pressed to find anyone offering free streaming services. Streams consume copious amounts of bandwidth, and bandwidth costs a not-inconsequential amount of money.

That said, you can listen to most streams free of charge. If you want to broadcast, and it sounds like you do, you have a couple alternatives if you're willing to pay. I use Live365 for my station - works well but can be a little tricky to set up. There is also Shoutcast. Many places provide Shoutcast services. You could inquire in-game to JSecure Hanks. I know he has a streaming offer. Not free though...

If you Google for Shoutcast you should be able to locate any number of alternatives. If you find a free one, let me know :D

SAM Broadcast vs SAM Party DJ vs Shoutcast on WinAmp

Hey Cutter,

Thanks so much for your reply. I have the latest version of Winamp that does come with Shoutcast and I've been able to stream from that. But I'm guessing there's a difference between streaming on my own PC compared to streaming in SL. And my problem with that is that it's radio, so I can't add my own tracks to it.

I also downloaded both versions of SAM but am having trouble figuring out how to stream it into SL. Well, I'm having trouble figuring it out, period.

Just realized I need a mic right? LOL

I'm stuck at the exact same spot as well... I want to DJ live into SL, however I dont have a server yet.

How much a month does it usually cost?
What if it wasn't going to be on 24/7?

thanks

I went with rockandrollhosting.com and the customer service has been great so far. It will run you a minimum of about $10-$20 a month to have your own stream. Also, they will work with you on setting up a custom package. If you only want 10 streams but 128k, you could get that.

You can also ask around SL for opportunities to be a DJ. There are a number of SL radio stations and clubs that look to hire people to play music and add personality to events.

Wages for DJs aren't very high so paying for a server doesn't really make sense financially does it? I know it's a game and I do want to have fun but I don't have a lot of money going around.

I think there are some Club Owners with their own streams already who will allow you to use their servers. Very rare though.

Depends on what your ultimate goals are for DJing, Stella. I'd talk with Madame Maracas of RadioRadio if you're serious about starting out in the broadcasting field.

Good luck and feel free to IM me with any further questions.

Sincerely,

actually a note for everything stated in here. A good dj can make about 1800L in tips for a 2 hours event its dependent on the people. Most clubs wont pay a dj unless they are on their own and quite often have to provide there own stream. your more liable to get more off tips. Depending how many people you wish to stream to there are quite a few options. If you wish to know more about streaming contact me in game please!!!
