Recently after watching the today show there was a part featuring Alopecia areta. Alopecia is a condition that causes hair follicles to be attacked by the immune system, causing hair growth to stop. It is most often begins in childhood.

I design and sell hair in secondlife, and I got to thinking about starting a donation box in my shop, which proceeds would go to the well-known 'Locks of Love' Charity. I've considered a few different ways to do this, because I realize that starting a linden donation box isn't often trusted among most people. I'd also provide websites and the contact information for locks of love, if people were interested in donating, but don't want to go through the gamble of thier lindens not getting to the charity.

I basicly thought of two ways to do this,

1. Start a donation box in which you can donate as much as you want to, and you recieve a tee shirt or something simple like that saying that you've donated. (I realize that this would probably be least accepted, and I probably be going with number two)

2. Start a donation box in which you buy gift certificates for items in my shop for different amounts. This would be transferable to give away as gifts or use yourself. (I'm leaning towards this one)

I was wondering what others thought of this, and basicly trying to get any insight on if this would be TRUSTED. I happen to think that as long as people are getting the items that they want, most won't see much of a difference in where thier lindens go, and even encourage them to donate. I've also considered making this a long term kind of thing, if its successful, and donate lindens every month or two.

Thanks for reading, any questions or suggestions are also welcome!

...the best solution, albeit not one ready for primetime just yet, would be HTML-on-a-prim linking directly to the charity's website, prominently displayed as a solicitation for direct donations instead...in the meanwhile, i believe the SL can parse and send URLs to an external browser - this is the technique used in the metaverse messeger vendors, for example - so why not make a compelling static image or sculpture which links directly to the charity's website in such a manner?..

...i've considered passing in-world t-shirt and merchandise revenue along to an associated charity to be a pretty neat idea, too, but then one must address the issue of licensing any trademarks for use in such co-marketed fundraising efforts...it's a good idea, and certainly a legitimate license to conduct an SL campaign (duly noted on the charity's website) would go a long way toward alleiviating any trust concerns, but it's also a lot more work to set up...
