The Writers' Workshop is officially on! Thanks to Al Kaiser at the Second Life Community College, we can hold the workshop in one of their small classrooms. It will seat up to 12 people in a circle around the table, but if the workshop becomes hugely popular (*grin*), we can move to a bigger room. I'll start contacting everyone who has expressed interest in the previous thread next week (April 16-22) and we'll try to figure out a time/date for the first meeting the following week (April 23-29).
We're going to meet every week for an hour. As the workshop leader, I'll give out the assignments and comment on them before the next meeting. (We'll figure out the exact mechanics of that at the first meeting.)
It sounds like people would be interested in a general Creative Writing workshop, so I thought we could focus on "Show Don't Tell" for the first meeting. Plus, of course, hammering out the details of how to conduct the workshop, what people want to get out of it, the various skill levels and backgrounds of people in the workshop, and all that other setup stuff.
I'll prepare Notecards with high-level notes for each meeting, then we'll discuss the material in the workshop.
Sound good?

I'd be interested too...but I am on UK time. After 5pm SL time is after 1 am UK time.
My normal times for accessing SL are 11-2 am PST, or 10-4pm PST.
Thanks Cali

I don't think we'll manage to find a time when *everyone* is awake and available. But the workshop notes can probably be distributed to people who aren't able to get there in person, who could then do the assignments and get commentary.

Meeting time/date for first workshop
04-25-2006 11:44
The first meeting of the Writers' Workshop will be 6pm SLT on Thursday, April 27. Meeting location will be the SL Community College. Notecards with the first workshop topic -- Show Don't Tell -- will be handed out at the meeting, as well as be available for people who aren't able to attend at that time. The notecards will also contain the writing assignment for the week. Expect a short workshop, followed by a discussion of the logistics of holding a weekly workshop, and how well the proposed format worked (or didn't work, as case may be). Future weeks will have longer workshops. I look forward to seeing you all there!

Awww...I missed the meeting. Is there anyway I could have a copy of the show/don't tell notecard?
Thanks.

Sound good? Workshop sounds great, but I am curious (or as Alice said 'Curiouser and curiouser...'), what are your credentials for this workshop? I mean creative writing is a pretty broad topic, in fact some might consider posting on these threads 'creative writing' . Das Vadanya - W

Pick up Notecards inworld / Credentials
05-02-2006 08:08
I'm responding to multiple threads in this post.
Anyone who is interested in participating in the workshop, do a FIND on groups for Writers' Workshop. (You're welcome to join the group, but don't have to.) I list there the TP address where the notecards can be found, and the bulletin board for dropping off assignments. (They're on my front porch. *g*) The notecards include the handout for the first workshop, the assignment for the first workshop, and the transcript from the first workshop.
If you still can't find it, IM me inworld, and I'll send you the TP coordinates.
Regarding credentials -- as you can see from the transcript, the workshop is more of a guided discussion group than a class lecture, so we're drawing on the knowledge and experience of all the workshop participants. But as for my credentials, I've had over a dozen books published (mostly romance, some fantasy), and am a member of both Romance Writers of America (RWA) and Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA). I've given a number of lectures and workshops previously, and even had clips from one of my past lectures (at the RWA national conference) shown on the Valentine's Day episode of CBS Sunday Morning.
