Luckily my paypal is buggered at the minute, but I mean LL is really in the shit this time with credit card info being exposed to the public, I guess they picked the right time to close the forums, this is really bad PR for Second Life to see that it cant keep info properly secured in a database.. Oh and they are using MYSQL arent they?

Unencrypted credit card information has not been compromised. _____________________

For the second time..... Encrypted payment information was exposed - and the encryption on it is not particularly strong. We are already starting to see signs of tampering with Paypal accounts this weekend. From the blog: Detailed investigation over the last two days confirmed that some of the unencrypted customer information stored in the database was compromised, potentially including Second Life account names, real life names and contact information, along with encrypted account passwords and encrypted payment information. _____________________

The posts here aren't Googleable, are they, while they would be if they were on the various resident run sites.

It's upsetting, for sure, however tomorrow I will order a new debit card and two days later all will be well again. This has happened to a large number of companies and we've heard about a fraction of them because of California's laws *requiring* prompt disclosure once an incident occurs. None of these companies seems to be "in the shit." As a side note, I'd like to point something out: it is very difficult, as a society, to ensure the security of every merchant on the web and physical world. Maybe it'll be the pissed off teen with the photographic memory at the piercing pagoda in the mall or maybe it will be that porn site that you registered with earlier, but chances are that sometime in your life, your CC number will be stolen. It makes vastly more sense to simply protect the credit cards themselves. The current system requires that you give every merchant all of the information that would be needed to take your credit card to *any* merchant and that's stupid. There are simple, secure systems involving one-time or merchant specific passwords and account numbers that are implemented in countries other than the U.S. This does not get done in the U.S. because there is no financial incentive to do so. The banks make money on every transaction whether valid or not. If there's a chargeback due to fraud, the merchant loses, yet the merchant has to deal with the system that they're given by the credit card companies. Either vote with your feet (by going where?) or complain to your lawmaker. And be pissed at LL, but they're just one of many and they're a victim in this, too. p.s. -- who's going to step up to the plate and offer merchant-specific account #'s? Discover, are you listening? Paypal? Someone want to make yourself relevant and rich? |
