I don't know about the whole computer locking up but performance in SL for me is exceptionally terrible, much worse than the normal extremely bad.

Trying to use the Search dialog cause the packet loss indicator to go off fhe scale; it takes so long to respond one might think that SL had locked up, it it is just extremely slow.

The big map is exhibiting different behavior than has before: the green dots don't show up at all until after you click on the sim. The "members in sim" hovertip appears sporadically if at all - that is not that unusual.

Attempts to send snapshots to Snapzilla fail with an asset request error. Same thing trying to file an abuse report of a bug report that uses a picture. Boy does it annoy me when the bug reporting system fails to work properly.

One of my computers started locking up after running SL a while. The power supply fan was in the last stages before locking up completely, barely spinning. Running SL generated more heat than the system could handle and it would lock up. I replaced the power supply, thus replacing the fan. It's worked fine since then.

Well, the standard drill would be to ask for more specs: Brand of computer, operating system, model of processor, speed, amount of ram, video card model number and amount of video ram, video version, etc. Stuff like that. SL doesn't generally lock the whole computer up.

SL Network, ISP's and Performance...
08-20-2006 08:41
Hmmm... continued worsening SL performance - to the extreme for many residents. Continued huge increases in the 'inworld concurrency"..... routinely over 9,000 lately. I wonder if their is a relationship between those two issues?

Once again....I have posted many times regardnig LL's geographic location, the overloaded and unstable network / internet backbone, and overtaxed ISP's in the San Francisco region. Sure, the San Franciso area has huge internet and network resources, as compared to say Atlanta or Austin - but the demands on that network are also huge in comparison.

You can also find past posts on the Forums ( at least for now ) by Linden's indicating 'problems' with the network and local ISP's. As you know it is ALWAYS your setup, your ISP connection, your general lack of resources on the client side that is the cause for your poor SL performance. So, for LL to actually admit ANY server side or network issues indicates major problems on their side of the equation..

Won't go into all the details.... again.

The 'weakest link' theory very much applies to the net and your resultant performance. Coupled with ANY shortcomings or problems on your side = MAJOR performance issues with this huge resource hog we all know love.. hate...love.... called Second Life.

Bottom line, have the biggest and best computer setup you can afford, the fastest internet connection you can afford, and continue to hope LL can somehow hold up their end of the deal - even under the increasingly heavy loads.

"this computer is a big unit and new so it really is very confusing as why all of a sudden there would be a problem."......

Oh, BTW, there is also a 'house party' going on at the mother house.... not everyone is on station at the moment.

Strangely things are behaving themselves today. I didn't even notice any problems last night with 20 people crammed on my 720 sq m plot that hosts my theatre.

The problem the OP reported, above, locking the computer up and requiring a reboot, is not one of the normal SL related problems.

I am getting really oddball behavior from the website. Lindex pages are 50% of the time sending me to the status page which says the grid and website (or parts of it) are down for maintenance.

Numerous lag & freezes
08-20-2006 11:45
I have noticed worsening conditions is SL performance. I get to talk with many people each day at my yard sale and I can't remember anyone saying that they are not experiencing the same or worse performance as I am. I have stopped asking why convinced that I will never hear the truth. I just was looking at another yard sale and tried to edit a box being sold to see what the contents were. I had to wait approx 3 mins while a freeze thawed and it makes me wonder if the same is happening to shoppers when the view my for sale items. I am taking most the day off now since it has become a major difficulty just walking around. No doubt that there are many client side issues but in my estimation SL is being crippled and should go into overdrive to correct numerous issues before attempting to add any more features and stop insisting that all performance issues are client sided.

Red sim on the map in Cordova or Goguen just now. That is happening fairly often now, unlike, oh, six months ago.

There is one simple way to assign blame for lag, and avoid all these endless accusations against the client, the link, the isp etc. if these are not in fact the cause.

"View" the "Statistics" and if the "Time Dilation" is below about 0.95, or the "sim fps" much below 40, you have your answer. The server is crumbling. Not the fault of those other things at all.

Never complain to the Lindens about "Lag". Too vague. Time dilation is a different kettle of fish altogether, and far more accountable.
