Will there ever be a Windows ME release?

I'm currently borrowing a computer with windows XP Media Center edition on it, so I can run Second Life. However, the person it belongs to is going to be moving soon and taking this with him. The only other computer I have is a windows ME, with 640 RAM and an AMD Athlon processor. The processor's just a bit too slow to run XP comfortably. Also, I don't have the money to go get Windows 2000. So, since I have a feeling I'm not the only one who'd benefit, could you PLEASE make a release of Second Life that's compatible with ME? It'd be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
~Kuro.

It will work with ME if you put the XP CD in first.

I don't imagine so... an old version about 2-3 years ago used to... and 98 too, but not now, the system requirements are too high.

Slight issue with that. a.) I wanna keep my programs. All of them. Without reinstalling.

Also, b.) I have NO IDEA how to install that OS or even how to use it. I'm a Windows man 1st, Mac man 2nd, and Linux man....never even seen linux on a compy before. =.=;;;

I had an old laptop (granted, way below SL specs) running Windows 98 that I finally gave up and upgraded to XP on about 6 weeks ago, so you should be able to at least upgrade to XP, then work out what you need to upgrade from there.

Do you know your system specs by chance?
Also have you ever tried running XP on it? An upgrade will keep your files in tact.
Sorry you are losing the access to SL. Maybe the suggestion about putting the CD in before running SL will be a workaround in the meantime?
Good luck!

WinME is not terrible once you get it updated but even so SL won't run on it simply because it doesn't support many of the functions SL uses.

I used to use Windows ME. It worked fine, never any troubles. I liked the look of it perhaps best of the operating systems from, oh, DOS 3 to Windows XP. Apparently I had much better results than nearly everyone in the world. My ME computer is sitting on the floor behind me. I suppose I should make room in the closet to set it next to the Atari 800.

I don't think there is any chance in the world that LL will devote any time to making SL ME compatible. I don't think there's any point in taking the time to ask them, and no help anyone can give you in that regard.

If you don't want to install XP (or 2000) on your ME machine, and don't want to have to reinstall your applications, I think your best bet is to buy another computer.

While I doubt that LL will ever support ME I wanted to pass this info. along to everyone that may still be using ME. I bought an 800MH HP 4 years ago with ME on it and I have run it without any real problems at all for all this time. I had to reformat once because I got a hold of a virus that I just couldn't get rid of. I can't remeber which one it was, now. But I did run XP for awhile and while it ran OK, I found that it didn't run well on my comp. So I reverted back to ME. here is a link to a great tweak page for ME users. I didn't understand all of them but maybe some of you will.

http://www.burzurq.com/forum/trevtweak.html

Trev is a local hero on the computing.net message boards and after I did some of these tips my comp. ran great. Give it a try and hope all works out for you. For all the ME naysayers. I'm sorry that all of you don't like ME. I think its prob. one of the easiest and simple formats out there. I'll keep ME for as long as I can until I'm forced to switch over.

In case you may be wondering, I use my laptop for SL which has XP. of course.
