Most powerful/influenced list

Let me start off by saying I dont begrudge anyone from being on some arbritrary list. Ive talked to a few people on these lists and they are kind and generous hard-working people.
But whats the point? What makes you "powerful" in SL? If you're not a Linden how can you be said to have power?
Anyone can make a list of people they consider powerful. My list would certainly be different than any ive seen. Im sure I define power a lot differently than others.
So not to start any sort of flame war im just wondering if someone can explain why these lists are always around?

I'm not a fan a top ten lists, but a "Most Influenced" list might be interesting. I bet I could get on it, too...I'm very suggestible.

I think for the most part because SL players get bored at work and posting such a list helps pass the time. I must admit though, I particularly enjoy the mutual-masturbatory nature of such lists. There is nothing quite like watching the smile on a person's face as their close friends and doe-eyed admirers lovingly stroke their ego.  |

I was kind of proud of that comment for some perverse reason so it makes me feel good that someone enjoyed it. Say, you don't happen to know how I could get one of my bored friends to post a list so I can finally be on one? My poor ego hasn't been lovingly stroked in quite some time and I worry about pressure build-up. |

Easy answer- people love reading and creating lists. It's even a whole TV genre here in the UK.
