Welcome to Second Life Toby!! One great place to hang out is a place that was created specifically to help new people to SL and it is called The Shelter. The have a lot of free items and tips and good people and I recommend every new person spend at least a little time there. Also, watch the events list for classes that are held that help new people. Often they are hosted at place that can be great hang outs when you are learning the ropes, and/or the instructors can tell you about some other great places to go. Have fun and hope to see you in world sometime!

Ditto on The Shelter.
Boardman and Slate are home to happy helpful people that'll be glad to show you around and answer some questions. Find Ingrid Ingersoll and follow her around. She loves that, goes everywhere, and knows everybody.

The Learning Center sandbox in Mauve is a good place to try the tools out. The regulars there are a helpful and supportive group. Good luck.
