You know, SL looks like it's in that awkward stage which a lot of technology goes through.

The VCR comes out... first few years we had very poor movies and adult stuff,
the same thing happened with the internet... adult stuff and gambling.

So SL is in that weird, youthful stage where it doesn't quite know where it's headed,
but that's OK, it shows signs of being very promising.

Once the lightbulb comes on in a few heads and people start thinking "Oh...
I could do this" then things will become very exciting.

I use a tool for firefox called "stumble" which takes me to very finely crafted web pages
and many of them are stunning, makes me wonder how in blazes they managed it.

If SL can keep going for another five years or so, it could look very different than it
does now.

Lets hope it does!

Well, Phillip said in his speech that there were something like 29 (I am not sure of that number) developers/coders, and 26 of them were working on fixing up the things that are already here, rather than creating new features.

I'm not sure about those numbers, but anyway, it sounded hopeful.

He also spoke (or Cory did) about having fewer updates. Which I think is cool, as I believe I was about the first person to mention them (a thread called something like, "Maybe there IS such a thing as too many updates";), which at the time resulted in several people explaining to me that no, I just didn't understand progress.

I'm talking more about peoples skill and attitude to the program, rather than what
the technicians are doing.... yeah sure, if [when] the technology improves and things get
easier to use [the inventory is hell :)] well...

But people have got to get over the "oh this is a 3D game, therefore I must shoot people"
[I think people like this are such dullards]

Or the, "I must sell stuff, but I will sell lots of P*ron, since sex sells"
look, I personally don't mind a bit of nookie, but does it have to be soooooo tacky?

Some parts of SL look like a $2 sex shop sale with a bit of gambling tossed in for
good measure.

Then you go to other places and they're full of "foo-foo" cute ornaments, possibly
from the same $2 shop which doubles as a garden centre for the tasteless...
lots of particles coming out of what ever graphic they can rip off google and wrap around
a block.

But this WILL pass...

Like a bowel after a dose of Epsom Salts, all this will eventually go :)

The thing which puzzles me about SL is why people can be *anything* they can
imagine and decide to be a bog standard human, it's hillarious!

If I'm standing before God or perhaps Budha, and we're looking down at a planet
and he asks me if I want to be a human, I'd roll around laughing my bum off.

When you're a kid, you want to be superman or something... and then some people
grow up and can be whatever they want... and they want to be a human with a bit
extra bling?!

What the hell goes so awfully wrong for these people, I feel sorry for them.

*gives them a big hug*

I can be whatever I want or a handsome dude with no special abilities other than
money, car and a hot blonde?

No brainer, The first thankyou!

You are quite right!! Ever notice? There's NO such thing as an UGLY avatar?? with minor exceptions of course, including myself. ;)

Hmmmm, my friends span everything from non-human through to idealised human. Myself, I chose to be 'average human' much like my RL self, a little 'better' maybe, but same size, build, even roughly the same facial appearance.
But it was my choice, and isn't that what SL is all about after all? The ability to choose?
Besides, what concerns me most is the person within, not the shell they present to the world. I have friends in SL who are amazing people, regardless of what they look like.

MM, I suppose it really does come down to personal happiness...
a lot of people in real life are perfectly happy people, and I like that.

Me personally am not "a happy camper" I don't like myself at all
and would wish it all away if some fairy god mother turned up.

I think being a garden snail might be a nice existance... you have a
house which is perfectly snug, plenty of food, and you can sleep for
months without even having to go to the lavatory! ;)

I have noticed with furries that there are never old furries...
I think what they do is send furries to the meatworks when they turn
30 and make pies out of them.

[I should have been sent there 10 years ago, shh don't tell anyone!]

I saw the most brilliant electric andriod-ish avatar some weeks ago,
all made out of shimmering coloured lines.

I've recently seen some pretty sad couch potatoes lurking around SL...

Kinda surprised me. I'm into being an fairly accurate representation of my RL physicality, but the potential to have a wide range in my "wardrobe" is appealing. :)

Are you implying that creative people are ugly?

No, No, Not at all. :)

I do happen to know some very attractive arty types.

Just that for me, when it's time to reincarnate and all the souls are lined up at
the top of the slipperydip having a fun slide all the way down to earth to become
humans again... I won't be there.

I'd rather be an earwig or something...
yeah, wig a few ears for a while and hang around with ladybirds.

You know, SL looks like it's in that awkward stage which a lot of technology goes through.

SL is three years old and we're still in beta. If anything, the system stability today is far worse than it was 6 months or a year ago. The sometimes-contentious but smaller family-style community of a year or more ago has been replaced by today's more profit-motivated and unverified gamer population.

Old bugs remain that were discovered a year ago and never fixed (but they have their "Tao";). The awkward UI hasn't been changed at all. My friends list is broken most of the time now. I don't receive IMs, but then I'll get them in email hours later. We can ban griefers from our land but they can still hover outside the parcel and create mischief all they want. Now sims are rolling back without warning and people are losing valuable items in the process.

Better? Actually, I think it's getting worse. Listening to Phillip is like listening to the White House Press Secretary. If his lips are moving ...

I see more and more better done things in SL. ... by Designers.. some one told me that she had friends that rejoined SL and was not sure it was same world as they had left a couple of months ago.. (I dont write out names without an OK)

The software has its ups and downs.. but if you never dare to test any - where have we been in the world?

No democrati, only preast, male version, and similar narrow minded things have still ruled us.. we had been at the fields draging up food to our feudal lord.

I compare with IRL then as if we have not dared - we had no computers LOL) - ..

The ones that dare are our future..

The way I see it, if SL were truly sucking, there'd be a mass exodus. Everyone would quit creating anything in-world, get RL Deskjobs, etc.

Quite possibly we're all waiting for things to get better. Kinda made me think of comparing Windows 3.1 to Windows XP.

Who knows!!! Maybe in 10 years we'll have Havok 2? :)

Having not been here that long (in the great scheme of things) maybe I am not qualified to comment, at least not without running the risk that someone will tell me I have no idea what I am talking about ;)

However .... imho SL is no different to any other program running on my computer in that sometimes it is a breeze to use, everything runs like clockwork and I don't want to be anywhere else. Other times it is buggy, frustrating and I wonder that I am still using a ZX Spectrum. (am I really that old? I think maybe my dad told me about them ;) )

Indeed my computer system is pretty top end stuff, and SL apart is not the model of reliability that it could be regardless of what I happen to be running at any given time.

Thankfully things progress! Remember waiting 15 minutes for the tape to load on the aforementioned speccy AND THEN turning over the tape to get the second half of the prog loaded! The problem is that as things progress so do our expectations and requirements.

One day the former MAY exceed the latter and we will probably still gripe about it! Indeed if we are ever happy with our lot then we will just gripe that how others use said technology does not meet our own exacting requirements ;)

My point (if I ever had one) is that sometimes we are too busy demanding what we want that we forget just what we have. Sometimes the phrase beloved of politicians is true enough....
"You never had it so good!"

Best wishes to all (including earwigs! Although it frightens me somewhat that with the whole gamut of creatures weird and wonderful to choose from you settled on this particular specimen?)
