Once upon a time there was a raging debate about whether SL needed to be made more friendly to ordinary people. SL, the argument went, was so oriented to the tekkies, there was really nothing to appeal to Jane Doe. Worse, non-geeks were regarded with condescension.
Well, the shoe is on the other foot now. 1.7 is (as of yet) very unfriendly to the artisans and scripterati.
Signals form the merchant class are mixed.
So as I write this, SL seems to be geared to attract large numbers of free accounts and residents with low expectations.
But what about the poor people with talent? What are they going to do now?

And yet, the Events button has gone away been replaced by the Build Button.
I guess that was the compromise. Free accounts, but lets juice them at every turn to build.

I would say the poop is now hitting the fan big time, having just perused the Hotline. These are relatively new players - the oldest being Buster (my age). They are trying to build. They don't sound dumb; they sound like they know what they are doing. Or they are brand new and buying items, only to have them go poof. Besides the new poofing problem, the textures are apparently NEVER gonna show up again, and the response from the Lindens is, can you show us when and where this happens? Well, how about just everywhere, all of the time? To where it's senseless to try to go texture shopping, and just applying ONE texture to a build takes the patience of a saint; never mind trying a dozen or more to see which looks best. Add the molasses effect, bunches of tinier bugs in building, and this appears now to be barreling along towards disaster, and fast. I'm starting to think I was right when I said that they should have dumped 1.7 a week ago. Older heads told me not to worry so; they have had other disasterous updates. But I wonder. As the days go by, I wonder if they are seeing the same game we are seeing, and even if so, will they be able to pull out of all this. Maybe it would have been best to pull it a few days after its release, regardless of the various reasons I was told why this wouldn't be a good idea. You bork the rides, you bork the airplanes, you bork the textures, you bork the texture business, you bork the building, you bork moving around - what's left? Not a lot. So - again I ask, why keep it? coco

It is? Fuck - musta missed that meeting. To tell the truth I've found 1.7 less of a pain in the arse than 1.3 I think it busted a whole of one script I had, and I needed to re-tweek one other. From: someone But what about the poor people with talent? What are they going to do now?
Dunno - troll the forums or go to Lindex I guess... ... Which did you choose?

But what about the poor people with talent? What are they going to do now? Thank you for bring this subject about............well yes we are growing with this freebie account idea. But maybe whay LL is trying to do is cause people to buy money and use it in the game. But the results of all these freebie accounts is people are getting more and more unfriendly and rude, greedy people are getting worse and even in some parts of the LL helpers there is alot of ego battles going on as well.

These forums overanalyize things. If Philip Linden farted there'd be threads like "Philips Fart Ruined the Economy", "Why only were the FIC allowed to smell it", "What about Poor people without gas", "Fart Released Too Early - Poor Planning", "The affect of gas on land sales", "Anshe owns 90% of the air", "Farting was responsible for my sim becoming useless", "Farting: Grief or Nature", etc.

... Which did you choose? Oh for pete's sake.* This is not panic in the streets on the day after the upgrade. What the hell is this? You think people are going to stick around and grab lindens to buy your stuff now? You make some cool shit, but right now it stinks for a whole lotta people. It's fine for you so the people with performance issues are just a bunch of whiners pretending in order to cover up their own inadequacies? Honest to g..oops! I mean, fo' real brotha, you may be accustomed to people faking it and saying it was great (Hi Jonquille!) but it's not likely to happen here. Poop, even Enabran has changed his tune a bit; now who would have ever expected that? Les White, I know your lurking. Help me out here; come on in and testify to da man. Btw, Siggy, see you tomorrow. Thanks for doing your Radio Rawk shows over the weekend from the Big Easy and Biloxi for the disaster rellief effort. Can I expect to hear some Cajun sounds or will you be sticking to your fondness for the ska? (I hope my disagreeing with in the forum doesn't cause you to tell Lecktor "Fuck that, I ain't going anywhere near that bitch." ) * Disclaimer: I am referring to the generic "pete", or maybe Petey the Little Rascals' dog, and I disavow any association with the dude at the pearly gates or any other saint so as not to offend any individuals who are nonbelievers.

... Which did you choose? I hadn't started a General thread in months, up until yesterday. I even made another hotline post. I can't do what I want to do in world, what am I supposed to do? Maybe I'll clean the bathroom or something. I used to keep a bucket next to the computer so that I wouldn't have to leave the keyboard. Now that I can't do what I want to do in SL I can change my routine.

I always put the bucket in the closet when I have a guest. The bathroom is spotless, except for the stubble in the sink, but I pee in the sink daily to rinse that away. I keep the bathroom clean by dumping the bucket in the canal, and I stick by my motto: "always shower at HER place."

Honestly, Juani, do you think the stuff is so cool and that this place is so amusing that the people with the cash to spend will find it worthwhile to do so? There's a lot of competition for entertainment dollars and building is very precarious these days. How big is the market for cybersex and griefing? The kind of people who have it to spend and won't scream about the injustice of $3.25 for a thousand lindens need to be compelled to do so. I've shown people chinatown. Gone. I've shown them Spittoonie Island. Gone, but at least someone else took up that endeavor. What? That's gone now, too? Geez. I enjoy building and learning as I have and continue to do so. I'm not planning on leaving but neither am I self delusional and seeking out converts. At this point, I'm more inclined to discourage the kind of people you're expecting to spend money, at least until it is less troublesome relative to performance. I look forward to a better place and I don't want people to be turned off and unlikely to return. My recommendation is my word and my word is important to me.
