50,000 residents was reached on September 16th. 60,000 soon after on October 5th. Now 20 days later we are just 515 shy of 70,000. So if we are getting 10,000 new residents every 20 days and there are 68 days remaining in 2005, can one conclued that we should reach the 100,000 residents mark right around Christmas or New Years? Currently we max out at around 3500 users inworld at any given time. By adding 30,000 more potential logins, what do you think the average peak number of inworld avies will be at the end of the year? 4500? 5000?

Rick, I'd say 100k before the end of the year. Thing is though, we don't know how many of those are 'active'.

Of course, having 20 alt accounts still counts as 20 people. I mean, we could have players with split personalities and lots of computers...

Well, by some reckoning, AOL must have like 100 billion customers.

well I'm only new to SL and online gaming and have never tried MMO whatever it is before but I reckon SL rocks and as more users jump on board word of month will also spread exponentially. It's awesome!

From: Torley Torgeson Damn floppy disks. No, the floppies were great. You could reuse them. It's the CD's that are damned. Only good for coasters or shooting skeet. P2

From: Michi Lumin Rick, I'd say 100k before the end of the year. Thing is though, we don't know how many of those are 'active'. It doesn't matter how many are "active" just that they keep thier accounts, remember their passwords and log back into world when they hear something cool, or read something new in the NYT. Like the web. I used to be an avid reader of Slashdot, now I just head over there for the occasional post I find from another blog. SL is the next Gen Web, it's not WoW. Although I agree, knowing how many are active would be damn cool. But how do you measure active? What if someone takes a 3 month break from SL and then comes back everyday. What if someone logs in once a month, or once every 3 months? What if they log in just on the 3rd Tuesday of every year for thier super secret virtual worlds club.

It took 21 days this time but if you consider SL was down pretty much all day then we are still on track of 10,000 new residents every 20 days. While it may not be reflected that noticably in total inworld at one time, there does seem to be a large jump in those now using the forums. Welcome.

I'm excited about the future of SL. The addition of new faces to SL will be a benefit to everyone.

I'm waiting for some very special Residents to come into SL who haven't been here yet. One person can really make a world of difference—with so many more Resis joining us, Second Life is sure to diversify.

Are we looking ahead to the same same basic program with a giant grid? Lots more of the same ole same ole?
A grid so big that no one wants to traverse it in a simulated physical way, everyone using html on a prim to reproduce a somewhat limited reproduction of the real web?

Yesterday when I posted this first message we were 515 away from 70,000. Now we are 645 OVER 70,000. So that means we had 1,160 NEW RESIDENTS sign up in just 24 hours! If that trend continues we will have 80,000 in 10 days not 20 and 100,000 in 30 days not 60. 100,000 residents by Thanksgiving!

i wonder..

will we have to rent out the ENTIRE "Village" for the next SLCC?!? sure that may be an exagerration, but still.. at this growth rate, i imagine next years SLCC will need a MUCH bigger venue. (i may not have been far off by suggesting the Jacob Javitz center! )

Hmmm...Another interesting side note. I am 100% positive the webpage said 70,645. Now it says 70,631. Did 14 people give up and cancel their accounts that quick? Maybe they couldn't run SL, or they didn't understand what was going on because of 1.7, or maybe even they went to the WA and thought, "Get me the f@^& out of here?"
