Dear Mr/Mrs/Ms Hacker
Can you please give Linden Labs a call and help them straighten this mess out, I am sure someone with your expertise will be of great assistance to them. You may experience some difficulty getting through to Linden Labs at this time, however I am sure you can understand the difficulties they are experiencing at this time.
FYI, the FBI would like to speak to you.
Thank you.

I got to wonder?

What if the reason for leaving the forums open is to see if the hacker is a publicity seeker. Maybe to see if they might post something incriminating like, Ha ha I did it! Or very subtle like, What a crock-up this all is, maybe even, Wow what a great job the Lindens are doing protecting our accounts. Possibly they are spending the weekend with the phone off the hook so they can trace the hacker through an IP address or some other computer identifier. Take you pick this is just a conspiracy theory, or the plot to my next Net-fiction novella.

It would be a good idea for them to add individuals to their staff who like to work on this kind of stuff since the Tao of Linden indictates such preference is needed to get the job done. I bet they wouldn't even mind working on the weekend.

lol thats a hoot, brings to mind tho a couple years ago when i got cable internet, i was worried about a good firewall, i contacted a hacker friend in the UK and asked him what was the best one, he sent me the only one he hadnt been able to get thru, so far so good its worked great. Perhaps LL can cut a deal with their hacker, ok im kidding...but its something to think about

Ironicly maybe they should be looking to recruit a hacker to their staff, after all there is an old adage that the best way to catch a thief is to think like a thief. There are hackers that will legitmately work for companies for the sole purpose of combating the malicious ones, and if the Lindens had a hacker on the pay-roll then maybe things like this could have been avoided.

Damn... I have to break my promise of staying true to my 100 posts... Just to say... Sure it p*es us off that it was thorugh LL incapability that our info got leaked, but let's not forget the main culprit here... the phucker that did this. if I ever catch him or her, I'll nail that bastard from his or her private parts to the wall. Ok? End of story.

That's nice wishful thinking and it works great in the movies but I'd be extremely leery of anyone who hires a jackass miscreant solely under the mentatlity "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em." Obviously someone like that is severely lacking in responsibility, so you'd have to keep *more* security staff around to watch each other and make sure they don't pull any stunts from the inside. That's all a lot harder because Mr. Snottypants now lost his anonymity and knows he's being watched. But all he needs to do is swipe one CC number and he's got a ticket to cause plenty of damage.

Calling all hackers 'jackass miscreants' is extremely naive. You only hear about the bad ones, as is the case with any group. There are very responsible and talented hackers in the world, there's companies out there who make a business out of hiring good hackers for the sole purpose of breaking other companies software. A lot of major software developers rely on places like that to find vulnerabilities first and report them so that they can be fixed before they're discovered 'in the wild.' I don't think it'd be at all amiss for LL to do something similar.
