Hey folks,

I want to buy a dress for a friend I've met... sorry if this is a newbie question, but if I buy a dress and it is in my inventory, how can I transfer it to somebody else?

Thanks for your help on this... C C

you can only if it has the correct permissions, you can right click an object in your inv and check the propertys, and permissions, it would have to be transferable, some objects are set as no transfer, but if it is able to be transfered you can drag it into there profile to give it to the or on there avatar, i think the best way if its something expensive, since most expensive stuff is nomod no copy no transfer permission would be just to give them the L$ to buy it thereself

That's what I was thinking too... I sure don't want to rip off anybody, but I want to buy her a $L 200 dress... and I sure don't need it myself.

So I guess the thing to do is go shopping with her, have her buy the dress, and me reimburse her.

Sorry if this is a dumb question... please don't flame me...

Most vendors allow for gift giving. You simply have to IM them, let them know what you want to send as a gift, and to whom. They will make payment arrangements with you and deliver your merchandise to the proper person. Some even gift wrap. Just ask :-)

Also many write the permissions in the description. So if you click buy you will see the permissions then can continue with ok if it is transferable or hit cancel if it is not or doesn't say.

Thanks so much for that suggestion... It makes sense, just like in RL retail.
That way, it will be more of a surprise.

(PS and no, I don't look good in a skirt, SL or RL!)

Thanks for the help - CC

SL Exchange and SL Boutique both allow you to buy items and specify a friend in-world to recieve it.

Most merchants, even if they sell an item as no-transfer, will happily sell you a transferrable version of an item for a gift.

Honestly though, your lady friend will probably be the most thrilled aty the idea of you taking the time and making the effort fo shop with her for her gift! That way, she can get something she will actually like, and you can still be generous! There are few things as embarrassing as giving or recieving a well-intentioned gift that the recieving person wouldn't be caught dead wearing. (wrong color, not their 'style', too risque, etc.).

Isn't it pleasant looking at a thread that is about someone wanting to figure out how to do something nice for a friend--instead of being one of the usual super-sized bile smoothies that generally get served up here?

I'll second Miss Murakami's recommendation that you take your friend out shopping. Surprises are nice, but Miss M. has a good point about your making sure your friend gets something she really likes and looks good in--plus, then it becomes a social occasion for you both--you know, recreational consumption as bonding experience and all that.

Have fun.

*nods* Both SLExchange and SLBoutique allows for gift giving. And I tend to take my RL/SL partner shopping or just give them the money to go shopping. It's amazing how well that works for both of us! That avoids the whole no-transfer thing, since even my clothing that I make is no-transfer.
