Is it just me or does SL seem blazingly fast to other people after the downtime? I thought things got alot faster a week after 1.7 was released (no sarcasm, SL really did get faster for me and the areas I frequent). Today though, things just seem to be almost instant that yesterday at least seemed to take a second or two.

Where is all this lag. I've only got caught in lag by telehubs and by one sim I found out later had a huge casino. I mean, I expect lag in these places, but everywhere else has been fast for weeks. No one else has noticed things get faster?

I agree with Dark, things have overall been improving for me as well.

AMD Athlon XP 2700+ 2 GHz
1.5 GB RAM
ATI Radeon 9600 with Omega drivers installed
4 Mbps cable connection

Lesee....

2.0ghz Athlon
512mb DDR RAM
20gb HD :(
GeForce FX5200 128mb.....

I just got the card today (Thanks Lall) and I prolly need to clear cache, make adujustments, etc, etc. I don't really hit any network lag that I could notice. But I was hitting some framerate issues that I'll need to sort out. OTOH, my entire computer is a damn bit snappier now.

ATI Radeon 9200 128Mb
connection ranges from 36Mb/s and 54Mb/s it seems

Might also splurge on another 512Mb of RAM if you have the money. I know I'm normally using over 512MB of my RAM even when Second Life is off, so when it is on, 1GB helps alot.

Has anyone gone from, say, 1 GB to 2 GB of RAM and noticed a substantial difference in SL's performance just by adding more RAM alone?

I don't hit 100% on 1GB with Second Life on unless I have tons of things going at once, so I would assume it depends on how much you are running in the background as to whether 2GB RAM would help. Getting rid of spyware can always free up some of the RAM you already have as well. Spyware sweepers are worth their weight in gold in my opinion.

When did they make a 2GHz Duron?

I noticed a substantial difference when I followed the instructions on the post at /108/b8/73105/1.html.

However, I would recommend trying to find a better program than RAMDiskXP (or whatever it is that person is using) something that is not a trial period thing.

I would if I could. The card was an Anazon Wishlist donation. And it just ran the Quake 4 demo pretty freakin' smooth. I was poppin' caps in alien ass, booyah!

Oh course, now I can't use the Slow Card excuse when I get pwned in deathmatch.
Course... I'm more of an Onslaught guy, anyway. :D

Whilst Im on a poor connection while at campus, that factor aside, I have seen this too. Every one keeps on saying SL is getting worse. While on one hand I say this is true, we need better Client <=> Server communications and Physics Implementation now, I have noticed that 40-50+ avatars can be in a single sim and I can still move around perfectly fine. This has NEVER been the case until now. Now given your FPS might be taking a hit, I'd say thats a given from the "less than" well developed graphics engine. BUT, I have also seen tringo games running the fastest I have ever seen as of late, this being in highly populated sims at the time.

SL is fast for me, the only time when it lags seems to be graphical lag around some objects and it's rare ; like a big animated fire wall in the combat sim the other day. Moving away from these object restore fastness and since it's still in the same Sim it must not be the sim lagging but my PC.

SL 1.7 is good, the last time it was slow was before they changed the loading texture from semi-transparent grey to solid grey.

Hmmm, with 4Gig and SL not running, about 350Mb of memory used - launch SL and memory useage jumps to about 700Mb

Meantime cpu load jumps from 2% to 100%!

That's Win2kP and a 3.2Ghz P4.

From what I can see SL is highly processor intensive but requires very little memory - I can't help thinking that IF it were a decently designed app it would check available memory and use the (in my case) 3Gig of spare ram as a cache... Too simple I guess?

Whatever, my experience suggests that extra RAM is a waste of money where SL is concerned, 1Gb is ample.

In modern OS like Windows, I'm not sure a program has a way to know how much physical memory is available since the OS automatically swap chunks of memory onto disk when physical memory gets scarce.

What LL could do is update the config screen to allow larger memory sizes to be selected and have SL use more memory accordingly.

Agreed - but, if the OS doesn't know how much physical memory is available - how does it know it's time to use VM 'when physical memory gets scarce'?

In fact I think you'll find that OLDER OS' are worse at determining free memory than newer ones...

Having said that, I've NEVER seen Win2kP use more than 50% of my 4Gb, which is a bit annoying when you've splashed out on that amount. To my mind w2kp is a bit too eager to use VM when it's not necessary and max out the cpu at every possible oportunity.
