Will there be a funeral?

With all the death predictions, will there be a funeral for SL ?

Probably.. either on There.com or another.... And it will then be more of a roast than an actual funeral

There will not because it won't die completely. Even when the deceptions of land scarcity and central asset maintenance are exposed, it'll still be a cool, multi-user, Internet platform. So some bit of the wora'uld will remain just like people still hang around in alphaworld, TSO and Dereth.

I have it planned for June 23

I overheard they were planning a resurrection immediately after it's death...

Oh, no, wait, I misunderstood, they said they're hoping it doesn't die before we all have a chance to "rez errections", my mistake.

I think it's more likely to go into a long term coma, followed by at least 6 months of failed attempts to bring it back.

I think SL right now is in that phase where they could apply some of the basic elements we've been begging for and revive it somewhat, but if they just keep adding glitz and glamour while neglecting the feature voting stuff, it's going to keep sliding down this slippery slope and wind up a place for virtual sex addicts and not much else.

We are also holding a memorial service/wake/raid in World of Warcraft on the 22nd.

I don't think SL is likely to die any time soon. There's a cycle of decisions a software project goes through when key aspects of the final outcome are decided. Should we implement this? How should we do it? Is it worth it? It looks to me like SL got each decision pretty much on the money. It's quite well crafted, offers some huge degrees of freedom and even if the economy tanked, it's a great social tool.

I can't imagine using another virtual world. If something were missing that was in SL like content creation (simple and effective content creation) or land ownership or scripting or sale of one's own works (let's not get into IP battles eh?) then I would firstly wonder why the functions weren't available, and secondly ditch said virtual world as quickly as I had picked it up.

I think we need to figure out solutions to SL's problems, I honestly do, but all the while we should not forget how bloody awesome it already is! It's not like we've been handed a bucket of shit and we're pissed that there's worms in it, we've been handed a gold brick and we're pissed that there's flecks of carbon in it. (That's how I see it anyhow)
