Could someone please tell me what the differences are between renting a home in a PG or a Mature sim? Thank you!

Theres some dilliberation as I understand it.. You shouldn't swear in a PG area, not heavily anyway.. You shouldn't be naked outside your own home.. Inside your own home is where the dilliberation is, I believe, on whats allowed as long as its behind closed doors.. Also images (textures) that may be considered mature, aren't allowed in a PG area..

Global Standards, Local Ratings
All areas of Second Life, including the www.secondlife.com website and the Second Life Forums, adhere to the same Community Standards. Locations within Second Life are noted as Safe or Unsafe and rated Mature (M) or non-Mature (PG), and behavior must conform to the local ratings. Any unrated area of Second Life or the Second Life website should be considered non-Mature (PG).

I have no idea if this is still in place but a year ago I did ask a linden the same question. I was told that everything had to be PG even inside your own home and not visible to the public. That the sexy stuff inside a private home and not visible was the definition of what was allowed in a MATURE sim. It may be that this has relaxed some as SL has grown but maybe not. Honestly I would ask a linden if in doubt about something. :)

It does seem that PG and mature are two extremes and there's no real middle ground.

» PG: saying something is a "pain in the arse" or getting changed in your house can get you kicked out
» Mature: everything's packed out with tasteless porn and sexballs as far as the eye can see

Why is there no middle ground? "Mature" seems an inappropriate word for the rubbish you see in sims of that category. I wish there were some medium sims where moderate swearing was allowed, but mindless sexual content and violence was prohibited.

I agree, PM. In the absense of that, I believe the landowner's more restrictive policies trump the sim rating.

I run the Shelter in a Mature sim, but overt sexual content or weapons are not allowed. It definately starts a disagreement at times when I have to enforce it, but the vast majority of folks are overwhelmingly respectful (and apprecietive) of it.

You can read the formal criteria but as the world is not policed per se but rather by response to player abuse reports there is a goodly amount of luck and tolerant neighbors that factor in.

If you wish to play it "safe" follow the recommendations above. In practice, the world is a little more tolerant in my experience. Players have often uttered heartfelt profanity in PG without repercussion. I lived in a PG sim and some new neighbors moved in and began nude skydiving; if I was the type to be offended by that, I could have reported them and maybe they would have been given a talking to or a short (3 day) game suspension, or nothing might have happened.

I know some people who will go indoors to change clothes so that they aren't "undressed" for a few seconds outside. I've also seen people having simulated sex on a field in a PG sim. The rules for PG sound pretty strict largely to keep people from offending others. Hate speech and non-consensual shooting are probably the biggest no-no's. If others are around, be polite; however, none of this is a guarantee that someone won't fly by in the instant you type a word like "fark" a decide to report you.

See, didn't that clear things up. ;)

There's plenty of islands where the sim owners tread that line, and I'm sure there's places like that on the mainland too... they're just harder to find. basically, you start drawing the line when someone says "no public sex on my land" and if someone tosses down poseballs and goes at it they get banned.

The trick is getting a big enough group of owners to agree. In the islands, that's much easier to achieve because there's only one owner to get to play along.
