Has there been any movement on the ability to output chat or IM to a text file. Using this we can then use any locally installed TTS program and speak the text for any avatars we choose by simply searching for lines starting with their name. All we need is the file to start this new feature ideal for those with poor eyes or just an interest.

Yes, this would be ideal. I believe Eddy Stryker is working on reverse engineering the protocol with pcap.
Having that feed into a TTS system would probably be the ideal way to do it. _____________________

Except that TTS sounds so hideous.

true it's still got a ways to go, but i've heard some TTS programs that've gotten pretty decent. we've come a long ways since dr. spaitso!
i think a combination of TTS and STT will make for an interresting future compromise between people like myself who prefer text because we have roommates who don't wanna hear voice all day, and the people on the other end that want to talk to me in voice. i could say...send/recieve everything in text, and they could send/recieve everything in speech. also lets the guys here who wanna claim they're girls talk with a (monotone) female voice ![]() |

reitsuki beat me to it. but yea. waiting on/parsing email adds more delay to the already present delay of waiting on the person to hit enter so it can start reading it aloud.

I love people who prefer to detract in abstract from an idea instead of giving it a shot.
It's truly people like these, with a can-do mentality and the drive to come up with solutions in the face of adversity, who make the world move forward! Bravo ![]() _____________________

You could set up a server on your machine and run a PHP script that received HTTP requests and dumped the contents to a text file, that would be quick...
...okay, that might be a bit trickier to set up. |

If we used a locally installed TTS program then there would be no bandwidth hit at all and you could choose to activate the voice for the people you want.

Yeah, I agree. It would be much better if the client did that itself rather than you having to waste time with scripts and such.

There are some better TTS voices coming out that don't have that "computerish" quality to them... pity they aren't free

I love people who prefer to detract in abstract from an idea instead of giving it a shot. I actually did try it, thanks. It was one of my first thoughts for email. _____________________

Instructions were posted on the libsecondlife-dev mailing list on how to do this (client-side only). If anyone has experience with TTS software but needs help with the Snowcrash end of things let me know, it's very easy to recompile with the necessary hooks.

Hello Eddy,
Would this allow me to hear the text from IM and chat? |
