You have to get Poser 5 or 6 (not sure if Poser 4 works, anyone know?). There's also a great tutorial on how to make animations in Poser written by someone in SL, not sure who though, just do a search for "Poser tutorial"

Actually, Poser 4 (now called Poser Artist) is all you need. Second Life will not make use of any of the more advanced features found in Poser 5 or 6. It doesn't hurt to have 5 or 6, but they are more expensive and they won't get you anything extra if you are only going to make animations for Second Life.

You can purchase Poser Artist here for about $90 and you can even download it immediately if you would prefer not to have a physical copy shipped to you.

Check out the animation forum here for more help and advice on creating animations for Second Life.

Blender is free and can export in BVH format with the correct plugin. There's also another free BVH editor out there, I've got it on my Mac but have never launched it...
