I don't know where to post this, but my account for LadyinRed Axon was hacked on Sunday Sep 3. I understand that there were other hacking at the same time. It was reported to Live Help, email sent to Support and I have left numerous telephone messages with Linden Lab Support. I cannot stop the individual using my name from posting but I apologize and hope that the SL community understands.

You have several people in your corner....just know we are here and hoping the jerk who did this gets what he deserves!! I just wonder how the heck this can even happen... very scary. LL really needs to step up here!

What's up with all this is that 2/3 of you account login information is already known. Also, people not using secure passwords such as letters, numbers, and symbols.

And there are deceptively simple methods of discovering other people's passwords, as well. When the Lindens tell you never to use the same password on prims in SL or account registrations outside SL, they mean it.

I posted one hacker's weak attempt over at sluniverse.com but I won't link to it here simply because I would end up being punished instead of the hacker.

No matter.... her sl is ruined, and what if LL doesn't help?? This could happen to any one of us! It's easy to talk about secure passwords etc, but at this point that doesn't even matter!! Just think of all the time and effort you've put into sl..... and it could dissappear in the blink of an eye....

Passwords
09-05-2006 08:41
Dearly Darlings,

I did not realize this until Lord Sullivan told me. He made me change my password. The problem is...I sometimes forget and try to use the one that was just letters. I now have a cheat sheet with all the SL and various Forum passwords on it. How often do you folks change your passwords here?

Ever Yours,

Mrs. Showdog Tiger

The note about secure passwords are good for future reference. If she gets the account back or something.

Mine is mixed cases, numbers and random symbols. Way too long too.

Personally, around once every two months. It's not that often but my password is complicated.

In answer to your question and another in the post...my password does not appear on any prim, and it isn't a word/number or anything that would have been that easily accessible. Until I have been able to talk to someone at Linden Labs I will remain relatively quiet on this issue in an effort to not get in their way in rectifying the situation. I posted to apologize to anyone that the imposter has offended and hope they understand that this is not something that I would do in SL or RL. I'm embarrassed by it and truly sorry for those insulted and offended.

I find it very disturbing that LL would be so unresponsive to this issue. Have they frozen the account, at least?

Anyone who even vaguely knows you, knows you could never say those things. You should not have to apologize to anyone. Hopefully most everyone just ignores ignorance.

My password isn't easy to guess. I use different ones for each thing i do. Forums use 1 password, email uses another, games use a 3rd, and messengers use a 4th. They arent easy words to find in a dictionary but they are things I can remember and they arent just letters. i advise you to be more secure with your passwords. If you must use the same password for everything atleast change parts of it. I constantly change my SL password around every time i feel like i need to.

I would love a key card. Meaning, I have my regular Login and Password. Then for a fee, Linden would send me a key card and reader. The reader would generate a random password each login. I would feel more secure with that.

Just like this system... http://www.entropiauniverse.com/en/rich/5330.html

passwords can be changed through the site, I have done so myself, that will stop someone from hacking your account.

here's a tip here: http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,124945-page,1/article.html about how to have useful passwords.
