Usenet is an evil place and I recommend you never go there.

I'd do it. Usenet's interface is *so* much better for this sort of thing than any web forum I've seen yet.

Unfortunately, a lot of ISP's no longer bother to carry newsgroups, so a lot of people would be forced to access it through Google Groups...which sucks, IMNSHO.

(But hell yes I'd be there. Without rezmods to keep my awsome flaming skills in check, I'd send the whinging luser brigade home crying to their mothers. ;)

Usenet groups don't have to be in the alt groups, and aren't necesarrily unmoderated.

"alt.secondlife.anshee.die.die.die" might take some of the heat off Wesley Crusher.

rec.games.secondlife? [1]

My impression was that it was virtually impossible to get a new group into anything but the alt hierarchy these days? And hard enough to do that.

As for moderation, I dunno. Personally, I'd be reluctant to see the group moderated myself. (I was only kidding about sending lusers home crying. :) If the group is likely to work, generally a well thought out FAQ and peer pressure will be enough to keep it in line.

For the people who are interested in making a SL newsgroup, what sort of Usenet experience do you all have?

Myself, I used to be a regular on alt.gothic, and alt.gothic.pretentions from about '96 up until about 4-5 years ago, and spent some time as The FAQ admin for both groups.

These days I mostly just lurk on rec.arts.sf.written, r.a.sf.fandom, and alt.support.childfree.

Anyone else?

[1] Yeah I know it's not a game, just throwing out an idea of where it'd be most likely to fit.

Ah, the good old days of Usenet... takes me back *memories of the way we were*

I don't start flamewars, I end 'em. *evil cackle*

For a while I was pretty regular on soc.bi, and I'm still in the FAQ there. I also had some flamy fun over at alt. satanism, alt.discordia and of course alt. spam.... haven't been there in a while I admit. But I was totally immersed in Usenet on different groups for about a year or two at one point.

I greatly prefer a FAQ and peer pressure to moderation. There's never a way to moderate fairly, I say open the gates of war and let the devil take the hindmost.

The nice thing about Usenet, even Google groups, is the low bandwidth factor. As in, surf on lunch break hehe.

QFT!

This is especially true because if you don't like the interface, you can try another usenet client. Personally, it would cut my reading time in at least half. (First day: kill thread, kill thread, kill thread, ..., kill thread, mark thread, kill thread, kill thread....) Only deal with the annoying threads once.
