The Ivory Tower of Primitives (found in "Search";) is probably the best place in-world to start.

Once you get the idea of the tools, experiment ... that's where the real learning begins.

I got started building by simply learning move, rotate, clone, link and unlink.. the rest came as needed.

I'll second what Mr. Nerd suggested, it's not only the best tutorial on building, it also teaches you the SL interface brilliantly! It's in Noyo, if you use the Search function for Places, it should pop right up.

The "lessons" are modular so you can go at your own pace. Information is presented on notecards (click the lil question marks, they make the cutest lil popping sound), visually with images of the edit menu/window as well as the prims successively moving through the steps of that module's task.

Be sure to find the bin with the different build "materials" (wood, glass, plastic, flesh), and give Homer's head a lil tap with your audio up. Always makes me giggle. :p

For any and all new folks I meet, it's pretty much the first thing I suggest or take them to, it makes everything afterwards much easier! :D

Welcome to SL, and if you need a LM or some silly goodies, hit me up in world, I'll drop them on you!

There is a building tutorial at the New Citizens Inc. headquarters.

The help that comes up in SL when you press F1 has basic instructions on building. These are on the web at http://secondlife.com/app/help/building/building_index.html .

On Live Help, you can ask for a Linden Liaison to get a volunteer to teach you building.

There is a group called Builders of Second Life that you can join, this group is a place to ask questions in.

You can use the events search to search for the term build with a category of Education.
