There was a beautiful sunset over the Western Sea today.

Small groups gathered for smalltalk and civil discourse, and there was this really cool, relaxed vibe.

Someone asked me if they could use some of my textures for a gazebo they were making. I said sure.

A bunch of us are working on stuff for fifth sim. We had kind of a 'show and tell' and wore silly, flexy hats. Mine was like the 'cat in the hat' hat, hugely oversized with red and white stripes.

We talked about the trolley, what the new locomotive should look like, and submitting articles for the Caledon Herald.

I activated hardware lighting for our signature streetlamps, and have been making the flags wave with the new flexy feature.

Nothin' really earthshattering going on, just steady expansion and good times.

That's why I like Caledon. :)

Have you reached the Port and Highlands yet? I sorta made my street light / plot timers work as lgihts by sticking a small light sphere inside them. If you have, I need to mess with the camera angle and get the spehere out of them.

Yeah I did. But if you like yours better, let's use those instead, it's all good. ^ ^

No, my lamps gave off light, but still looked off, since the glass didn't light up. I am sure your version will look FAR more realistic than my quickfix for the dark storefront. :)

Good for you, Desmond. It's nice to see - as that quote says - that the master is a good one.

It's an article of deep belief to me that enlightened despotism is more efficent, perhaps even better, than other forms of governance. The stakes in SL are low enough, and mobility high enough, that even a less-than-enlightened despot is not really a problem.

Which doesn't really say much about how worthwhile it is to try another way in SL, you know?

Such peace is the obvious and natural byproduct of the benevolent rule of Grand High Mucky-Muck Newfie.

My policy of complete control over the sim with a policy of empty threats, barbecues and weekly storytelling for the children has resulted in a wonderful utopia.

Keep up the good work!

If your policies also include storytelling about barbequeues to the children, then I'm all for it.

Ahh, how I love to wander throught the streets of Caledon! It is such a wonderrful place, even when there aren't many people around.

One day, ONE DAY, methinks I shall buy a gown from one of the shops. (Or make my own, whichever strikes my fancy first!) :p

Agreed. Caledon is a wonderful place for a stroll; it's very visually soothing and consistent. I've visited the island a few times, and while I'm there, I confine myself to travel by foot; flying while there just seems so...inappropriate for the setting, wouldn't you agree?

I used to remember romantic sunsets and sunrises in my garden overlooking the sea, before the Port was born. Those were lovely times. But times have changed and I've adapted. Now instead of the ocean, there's a stream behind my new store, where a garden lounge with tray of tea for the ladies, a small waterfall for those summer frolics, and my latest addition, a fishing rod vendor (which I bought from the talented Les White) for everyone who would like to take some time off and enjoy a little fishing.

It was such a delight when Desmond announced it and there was suddenly an influx of visitors. And it wasn't only the gentlemen who did some fishing but also some very adventurous ladies joined in the fun.

Caledon has indeed grown and there's so much to see and visit. And it helps that a great majority of the residents are so polite! It makes living in Caledon such a delight that now I have very little need to go to the mainland (unless I need to buy something). But other than that, I stay at home.

Aww, sorry I missed it. But, ya know... women come first. ;D I'll have to see that hat. It looks awesome in the screen shot.

A sense of community in Second Life is an INCREDIBLY undervalued thing. I have the same feeling in the City sims, Boardman, Deimos and even Deharo because we work together to make a "place" happen. It's a great way to connect with people and it makes the project fun.

I hope LL never loses sight of that. The more we can get for group building, sharring and community, the better.

I'll be visiting Caledon tonight, and I look forward to taking in the sights.

This thread is a quite nice place to stroll as well :)

Hermia's piccy is exactly the kind of hat I had! It was a gift from a friend :)

There were also rabbity-eared ones. Pretty soon all of Caledon is going to look like the Mad Hatter's Tea Party if current trends continue!

I have a deep respect for the efforts that many have made toward democratic systems in Second Life. My personal view is that someday, such systems will truly be best.

Anyone ever play the game Civilisation? You know, where you start out with a little tribe, and then you have to change your government? It sounds silly, but I see Second Life kinda like that.

Now, back to the Important Things!

Such as supporting the folk involved in the Trolley and Caledon Railway projects, and working up a team for the Relay For Life event.

Maybe I could beg the Ladies Society of Caledon for some assistance on the latter, I'm a bit stiff and shy apart from my land dealings.

In the end, community really *is* everything.

Sacrifice virgins to me Desmond. If my dark needs are fulfilled by the rulers of Caledon, I can assure you success in every venture.

I can see the analogy...which might explain one of the reasons I find SL so compelling; I've been known to be a total Civ addict at times...
