Open-ended discussion:
What would it take to make it possible to use SecondLife in real-life?
Obvious example of real-life usage of SecondLife:
- shopping malls, where you pay in L$, and receive the goods, could be a pair of sneakers, or a dress, by mail
Less obvious example:
- systems monitoring: map of the world, or a building, in 3D within SecondLife, with each facility marked by a green sphere. When something goes wrong at that facility, the facility turns red.

Check out RL work in SL. Big usage right now is education / simulation type projects. Pretty much what I predicted

Well, what would be needed to extend SecondLife further?
Like, thinking of the jobs one does in RL, many of them are heavily based on some combination of communications and computers. What would it take to be able to do these jobs from within SecondLife???

reliability, data backup, private ownership of servers, increased security, an increase of technology for more people to be able to use SL ...
... but we're off to a good start

Data backup is the #1 thing that is required. It's just surreal it isn't available.
More reliability, yes, always.
A better development / release process as well.

Improved chat system, improved group system, more control for land owner use, and voice.

I'm a massage therapist and I thought of opening a shop...but then I didn't think anyone would pay for that in a game lol. who knows though never hurts to try a new Rl thing in Sl and see where it takes you.

From: blaze Spinnaker OH man not voice, I have enough voices in my head already.. Okay, that was damn funny. Anyway, there are a *lot* of RL projects going on in SL. Education and simulations, yup, that's where it's at lately. At this point, doing RL projects in SL is considered cutting edge and experimental, and that tends to limit what sort of organizations are willing to try it out. Every org with which I've worked has some really grand plans (both big and simply amazing), but they usually start with smaller test projects first. A lot of folks are doing test projects as examples to help to secure grants to fund bigger plans. I'm looking forward to when we're mainstream . . . *wanders off fantasizing about backups*

We have been using SL as a 'Design Toolkit' for coming up to two years now. In that time we have used SL for creating a '3D canvas' and 'diarama' that allows us to add depth and create a different perspective for our design ideas. This has included everything from designing packaging, walkaround advertising, testing concepts and ideas, early product design development. We even tested Marvin the Paranoid Android for the feature film The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. It was also used for early work in the upcoming Chronicles of Narnia. We even have a client now who insists on logging into SL (our private off the grid area) to see his designs in our predefined areas. Photoshop comps just doesn't cut it for him anymore! Clients that we have used SL for range from Adidas, Disney, Vodafone, EMI... plus a lot more. SL is not a crisp-cutting edge development platform for 3D graphics, it does though give us a 'quick and dirty' look at the work in progress: Its the equivalent of 'scamping', but in a cartisian space. Our entire design department regular use SL now as a 'design construction set', we don't differentiate it from Photoshop, Illustrator etc. If they ever get the videos streaming from the SLCC, we showed a lot of examples of the work we've used in SL. In real terms, its saved us USD10,000's of savings in expensive out-of-house 3D work. www.riversrunred.comIn the new year, we are bringing in a major communication and media brand into SL. This will be a first step in the direction of commercial viable projects that go beyond 'testing' and 'concept' (from a SL community team rather than from LL). Fizik. **please note, avalon. is another project and is not related to our commercial work**

Show off! I've seen Fizik's company's work. It's beautiful and clever. My company uses SL for similar design prototyping purposes, but we've done more mundane stuff like motor vehicle livery and storefront signage and the like.
