Now I do know that everyone who first joined HAD to get a wee bit confused with their inventory. Mine is totally confusing... I'm not sure what I have, what was supposed to come with it OR how to use it. I have TONS of free stuff that I may have clicked onto that was free in the welcome area, and I think we win something if we can pick up that ball when we first arrive, and I did...BUT...

Can anyone point me to where I can find out info about the inventory and what it all is...I have furniture, clothes, household items etc...and NO idea how they got there or how they are used.

Thanks in advance for NOT laughing at me. LOL!

OK quick breakdown:

Pop your Inventory window open. There are two main folders: Library and My Inventory. Library is all the default stuff you get when you start - newbie clothes, Linden trees, basic furniture, etc. Everything else you ever accumulate will end up in the My Inventory folder.

In the My Inventory folder, there are some defaults that certain types of items will always end up in when you first get them:
  1. Clothing - any clothes items
  2. Animations - any dances, poses, etc.
  3. Scripts - scripts
  4. Gestures - any gestures that someone gives you
  5. Notecards - whenever you get a notecard, it ends up here
  6. Photo Album - when you take a snapshot and upload it, it will end up here
  7. Textures - when you upload a texture (or someone gives you a texture or photo) it will end up here
  8. Objects - everything else that someone gives you. Can be 1 prim or an entire linked house. When you make something and take it into your inventory, look here for it.
Now how you organize your stuff is up to you. I made new folders called Attachments (for stuff I like to wear, like glasses or bracelets) , Hair (cause I have tons), etc. etc. Also lots of folders for my builds and stuff I sell. Just right click the My Inventory folder and choose New Folder, then you right click the new folder and rename it.

If you want to organize a little easier, this is what I do:
  1. open up Inventory, then go up to File->New Window. You now have two inventory windows.
  2. You can multiple select objects just like you do in Windows (Shift-click the first time, keep holding shift and click the last item). Once you have things selected, drag them to the other Inventory window to the correct folder and release. Easier than scrolling up through one window.
OK now that you're sorted, using your stuff is easy. If its furniture, just drag it from your inventory to the ground. If its something like clothing, you can just double click on it in your inventory (or right click-> wear). If its an attachment, right click it in your inventory and choose Wear.

When you buy stuff, your items will end up in your inventory one of two ways:
  1. the item(s) will be in a new folder in the My Inventory folder, named the product you just purchased. Or...
  2. the item(s) are boxed up and you have to get them out to use them. Check your Objects folder for an item named what you just purchased. You will have to rez the object (drag it to the ground), right click -> Open, then drag the contents of the object to your Inventory window.
Hope this covered what you were looking for.

I just got in and can't believe how easy you made it all sound. All this time I've been trying to figure out how I got this stuff and what to do with it...if I should even use it or not. You not only cleared THIS up for me, but now I can organize my inventory and use two windows to make it easier.... Thank you SO MUCH!!!!! This is fantastic. And that will last you a little while. :) After a while, you will probably want to subdivide your folders as to keep things more organized. Like:

AV
+Hair
+Skins
+Forms
+Eyes
+etc

Clothing
+Pants
+Shirts
+Shoes
+Sets
+Dresses
+etc

Animations
+Walk
+Run
+Sit
+Pose
+etc

Textures
+Stone
+Wood
+Metals
+etc

Objects (the big one)
+Animation
+Movement
+Houses
+Pets
+Glasses
+Plants
+etc

Inventory organization is the bane of my SL existance.

Recent additions like the search function have made it easier, but I think if you do not start off organized, its like 1000% harder to get it into shape.

That's exactly what happened to me. I've been here a couple of weeks and I already have a grand mess. This help is wonderful :-)

Just another tip (which I picked up on the forums a few months ago)

Anything that is copyable can be saved to a notecard.

So for all those pictures you take, rename the picture for easy identification, then create a notecard, drag the picture to the notecard, then delete the picture from your inventory.

Viola less inventory to load and handy organization of subjects.

I have several picture notecards sorted by subject.

The notecard will stay in whichever folder you created it in and can be added to at any time, just remember to save anytime you add to it. When you want to use/view a picture just open the notecard click on the picture and copy to inventory (the original picture will still be on the notecard)

Can also use this for copyable items, same procedure. When you are ready to use that item just click on it, copy to inventory etc.

Hope you find this as useful as I have. Big hugs to whomever mentioned it previously.

*hugs*

I can't see paying for DS while I'm here whenever I get online. I'd rather use the extra $$ for land...LOL!
