Here is an interesting article about the possible Metaverse future - an Internet dominated by 3D technology, social spaces and economies - of the Internet and how virtual worlds like Second Life could fit in. Just wondering what you people think about this. Here an extract of the article: From: someone One of the questions asked most frequently throughout the event was whether an overriding metaverse of 2016 will be commercially owned or open source. There was little agreement about that, but it was clear that the companies seen as most likely to provide the tools for a single metaverse upon which many 3D, social applications could be built are Microsoft and Google. In part, Google was seen as more likely because of its development of Google Earth and its recent purchase of the maker of the 3D modeling software, Sketchup. But some felt that Microsoft could make a major play to become the metaverse provider and that it may well seek to buy something like the open-ended virtual world "Second Life" as a precursor to a larger play in the field. ... Croquet, an open-source software platform designed for creating collaborative, multiple-user online applications, showed off their software. Quickly, about 30 people gathered in a tight semi-circle around the two Croquet team members as they showed off the software's ability to let people move in and out of rich virtual spaces easily and with little of the lag and complicated user-interface of virtual worlds like "Second Life." Microsoft buying Second Life would certainly mean more development power being invested in the program, thus achieving a better. bug-free environment! Just take a look at Microsoft's work with the Windows OS...
Oh wait...
Damn!
Seriously, though, I'd much prefer Google acquiring Second Life than Microsoft, though I dislike both companies' business practices, I'd rather suffer the former than the later.

I would rather have Linden Labs not sell Second Life. I do not think Microsoft will honor lifetime memberships etc and thus a huge number of Law Suits might be filed.

The possibility of M$ purchasing SL put a chill down my spine. You can kiss support for the Linux and Mac versions goodbye. You can kiss support for the Open Source push that LL's is putting forward bye-bye. Google purchasing SL would be the better of the two options; if for no other reason than they have support, even if limited, for Open Source.

I would prefer Second Life to Stay with Linden Lab, BUT if they ever do sell, i would suggest google buy it. If microsoft buys it, then all the linux users and anti Microsloth people might quit lol.
